R-MC Sweeps RPI to Improve to 5-0

ASHLAND, Va. – Junior Michael Trentham (Midlothian, Va./James River) had a game-winning RBI single to cap a three-run seventh as the Randolph-Macon baseball team swept a home doubleheader with RPI Saturday afternoon at Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park.

The Yellow Jackets (5-0) took the opener 4-3 before claiming an 8-2 victory in the nightcap over the Engineers (0-2). Game 2 was called in the bottom of the eighth due to darkness.

R-MC trailed 3-1 heading to its final at-bat in Game 1. Sophomore Blake Saathoff (Catonsville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) pinch-hit to lead off the frame and was hit by a pitch. Sophomore Stuart Brown (Midlothian, Va./Trinity) walked and junior Christian Sanderson (Lynchburg, Va./Jefferson Forest) reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Freshman Nestor Rentas (Severn, Md./Old Mill) pinch-ran for Brown at second. Sophomore Jordan Schmeer (Richmond, Va./Benedictine) singled to right to plate Saathoff and Rentas to knot the score at 3-3. One out later, Trentham singled to left to bring home Sanderson with the winning run.

Sophomore Nic Phelps (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 K) picked up the win in relief of junior starter James Walsh (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) (5.0 IP, 2 H, 2 UE, 2 BB, 8 K).

The Yellow Jackets broke a 1-1 tie with two in the fifth and plated three in the sixth and two in the eighth to record the 8-2 victory in Game 2. Freshman Rick Spiers (South Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) recorded his second win, going five innings with five hits, one unearned run, one walk and seven strikeouts.

Junior Nick Maiolo (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) went 2 for 3 in the nightcap with a double, two runs and two RBI. Sanderson had a pair of doubles and drove in two.

Randolph-Macon has canceled its Monday meeting with RPI due to expected frigid temperatures. The Yellow Jackets return to the field on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 2 p.m. at Christopher Newport.
