PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – A total of 19 hits, coupled with a 5-for-5 showing by Luke Nagle (Pembroke, Mass.), baseball (2-3) won their second straight game of their spring trip as they hammered the Hawks of SUNY New Paltz (0-3) by the final of 15-3 Sunday afternoon at North Charlotte Regional Park Field.
Nagle dominated at the plate crushing a three-run bomb in the bottom of the first to go along with four singles, five RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Daniel Mantoni (Northbridge, Mass.) also carried the offense as he finished 4-for-5 with one RBI and three runs scored.
On the hill freshman pitcher Sal Frosceno (Derby, Conn.) was solid in his first collegiate start as the lefty went six complete innings. In his outing he allowed just six hits, three runs (two earned), and had three K's. After surrendering a run in the top half of the first, the freshman would shutdown the Hawks through five straight innings, before surrendering two in the top of the sixth.
After the one run top of the first for SUNY New Paltz, Nagle teed off on the very first pitch of his at-bat to put the Beacons out in front. From there they would never look back scoring another run in the second, with Nagle driving in Mantoni on a RBI single to right field.
The third inning would be the only inning in which the Beacons did not reach home plate. In the fourth, they would get another two runs to make it 5-1. Charlie LaPaglia (Marshfield, Mass.) and Anthony Searles (Shelton, Conn.) each drove in a run on back-to-back RBI singles to keep the Beacons in firm control of Sunday's contest.
In the fifth Bryan Dupre (Chicopee, Mass.) ripped an RBI double down the left field line, while Nagle drove in his fourth run of the game on a single to right field to make it a six-run ball game.
After the Hawks got a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, the Beacons quickly smashed any hopes for a late New Paltz comeback, with a four-run showing in the bottom half of the inning. Senior Chris Adams (Whitman, Mass.) led off the inning with the Beacons second of three doubles to get things going. From there the Beacons would get their first run of the frame on a balk.
Josh Lopez (New Haven, Conn.) would add to the growing Beacons lead after reaching home on an error by the right fielder. Dupre would get Lopez going on the bases after singling to right center. With Dupre now on third because of the error, Delvis Baez (Lawrence, Mass.) recorded his first sacrifice-fly to make it 12-3.
In the seventh, senior lefty Harlan Zeerip (Bridgewater, Conn.) stepped onto the mound, and continued to shutdown the Hawks bats, which managed just nine hits in the loss.
The Beacons closed out the final three innings, with three more runs, one in the seventh, and two in the eighth, while Zeerip and fellow senior Josh Cummiskey (Lowell, Mass.) closed out the non-conference victory.
Jamie Fox got the loss for the Hawks, after going just three complete innings, in which he allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits. He also walked three and struckout two.
Baseball returns to action on Tuesday when they take on the College of Wooster at the North Charlotte Regional Park Field #6.
