PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team dropped a pair of games on Sunday, falling to Wooster 4-1 before losing to UMass-Boston 15-3.

The Hawks fall to 0-4 and will look to bounce back tomorrow against Lancaster Bible at 3 p.m. Wooster improves to 6-0 and will play Lancaster Bible and Manchester tomorrow, starting at 10 a.m. UMass-Boston moves to 2-3 and will take on Wooster on Tuesday, March 17 at 1:30 p.m.

Wooster 4, New Paltz 1

The Hawks fell in Sunday's first game to the Fighting Scots 4-1, despite a solid outing by senior southpaw Brian Solomon (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy).

Making his first start of the season, the lefty threw six innings of one-run baseball in a no decision against undefeated Wooster. Solomon scattered five hits and struck out six Wooster batters, allowing just one earned run in the top of the first.

The Hawks tallied seven hits but were hurt by two costly unearned runs. New Paltz tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth on a Mike Sparacino (Commack, N.Y./Commack) sacrifice fly to center.

Solomon strung together a nice top of the fifth, striking out three Fighting Scots to keep the game knotted at 1-1. In the bottom of the frame, the Hawks looked to break the tie with back-to-back singles by freshman center fielder Jake Williams (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) and sophomore right fielder Andrew Martini (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury). Martini later stole third but was left stranded.

Wooster broke the deadlock in the eighth, scoring two runs on two hits. The Fighting Scots tacked on an insurance run in the ninth to hold off the Hawks.

UMass-Boston 15, New Paltz 3

New Paltz scored the first run of the game but UMass-Boston added at least one run in every inning but the third, eventually falling to the Beacons 15-3.

The Hawks managed to crack nine hits against the Beacons with senior first baseman Shaun Hansen (Southold, N.Y./Greenport), freshman second baseman Chris Amato (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) and Martini all providing two hits apiece. Hansen continued his hot start to the season, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.

For UMass-Boston, the three and four hitting duo of third baseman Daniel Mantoni and first baseman Luke Nagle combined to go 9-for-10 with five runs and six RBI.

In the top half of the first, Amato earned a walk and eventually scored on a Hansen single through the right side to hand the Hawks a 1-0 edge. But the Beacons answered in the bottom of the inning, using a three-run homer to put New Paltz in a 3-1 hole.

Trailing 8-1, New Paltz looked to rally in the top of the sixth and scored a pair to cut into the Beacon lead 8-3. Freshman left fielder Ryan Bowser (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) reached on a fielder's choice and Hansen came through with an RBI double to dead center, scoring Bowser. Hansen would eventually score the second run of the frame on an error by the Beacons' catcher.

But that momentum was short-lived for New Paltz as the Beacons went on to score four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a commanding 12-3 lead.
