NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - A combined 10 home runs in a double header sweep, including a Capital Athletic Conference record eight in the first game, lifted the 25th-ranked Frostburg State baseball team to a double header sweep of Christopher Newport, Sunday afternoon.
The Bobcats improved to 12-0 on the year including a perfect 5-0 in the conference while the Captains fell to 6-5 and 1-4 in the league.
Frostburg jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead after the first three innings with all of the runs coming on the long ball. Senior Ricky Castro led off the game with his first home run of the doubleheader after sending the eighth pitch of the game over the fence to give FSU a 1-0 lead. Senior Lane Farmer hit his first career home run in the top of the second to push the lead to 2-0.
Senior Ricky Brady, junior Zach Keeler and Farmer went back-to-back-to-back home runs in the third to push the Bobcat lead to 7-0. Brady started the home run chain with a three-run bomb followed by solo shots for Keeler and Farmer.
The Captains got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth with four runs on five hits. All of CNU's run came on singles.
FSU broke open the game with six runs in the fifth on six hits. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, senior Nick Walker came home a double from Brady. Keeler brought Walker home with a single to right. Farmer hit his third home run of the game to bring home Keeler and tie FSU's school record for home runs in a game with three. Castro hit his second roundtripper of the game and second of the inning to score senior Nick McElfish and give FSU a 13-4 lead after the fifth inning.
The Bobcats tacked on three more runs on senior Zach Weiss' first home run and FSU's eighth of the game in the seventh to give Frostburg a 16-4 lead.
The Captains scored the game's final six runs to cut the lead to 16-10 over the eighth and ninth.
Senior Bennett Schiltz earned his CAC-leading fourth win of the year on the mound for FSU. Schiltz went 7.1 innings, giving up five runs on nine hits while striking out eight.
Frostburg and Christopher Newport were knotted at 2-2 after the first four innings of the second game before FSU exploded for seven runs in the fifth to take a 9-2 lead. Walker singled to center to score sophomore JT Tipton and chase CNU's starting pitcher. Brady hit the Bobcats' first home run of the game and ninth of the double header to score Weiss and Walker and give Frostburg a 6-2 lead. Freshman Greg Schneider hit the Bobcats' second and final home run of the game to score Keeler and give FSU a 8-2 lead. Tipton rounded out the Bobcat scoring with an RBI double to left to bring around Castro and give FSU a 9-2 lead.
Christopher Newport plated the game's final three runs in the bottom of the eighth on three hits to bring the score to its final, 9-5.
Senior Clayton Freimuth earned his thrid win of the game after another dominant performance on the mound for FSU. The lefty went 7.0 innings, allowing just two runs, one earned on three hits and three walks while striking out 12 Captains. His 12 strike out performance is his third-straight doubledigit strikeout day of the year. Freimuth now has a team-leading 1.21 ERA on the year with 38 strikeouts. The senior has allowed just one extra base hit, a double, in 22.1 innings of work.
Brady finished the twinbill with five hits, including two doubles and two home runs, eight RBI and three runs scored.
#25 Frostburg State will travel to Ashland, Va. to take on Randolph Macon on Wednesday. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
