VanderWeele capped a five-run top of the third inning with a two-run single that gave Hope a 7-3 lead. The junior from Kalamazoo, Michigan (Parchment HS), added a two-run double in the fifth and a bases-loaded walk in the eighth.
Winning pitcher Coty Franklin (1-0) gave up 10 hits and four runs over five innings. The junior from Vermontville, Michigan (Maple Valley HS), struck out seven and did not walk a batter.
Brothers Luke and Landon Brower of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian HS), each collected three hits. Landon Brower, a freshman first baseman, reached base five times and scored three runs.
Senior catcher Brian Barnes of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Comstock Park HS), also recorded three hits, while senior third baseman Ben Pearson of Madison, Wisconsin (West HS), and freshman leftfielder Tyler Gulick of East Lansing, Michigan (East Lansing) scored three times apiece.
Hope wraps up its spring break trip on Thursday when the Flying Dutchmen play Springfield, Massachusetts at 9:30 a.m.
