WINCHESTER, Va. - The No. 14/25 Shenandoah University baseball team earned its third straight weekend doubleheader sweep by taking a pair from Hampden-Sydney Sunday.
Shenandoah (9-2-1, 7-1 ODAC) ran its unbeaten streak to eight games thanks to a pair of strong pitching performances on both ends of the doubleheader versus H-SC (5-12-1, 2-4).
In the opening 4-1 win, juniors Darrell Thompson and Ryan Mossman combined to pitch a seven-hitter while Michael Scimanico and Matthew Wilson tossed a one-hitter in the 7-0 game two victory.
Thompson (2-0) allowed the one run on six hits and one walk against five strikeouts before turning it over to Mossman for the start of the eighth.
Mossman allowed one hit and walked one in earning his first save of the spring.
SU scored two runs in the third and one in both the fourth and fifth to provide enough offense against H-SC pitcher Reggie Johnson (1-1).
Sophomore John Wilt had what proved to be the game-winning RBI with his two-run single up the middle in the third to score Ricky Pardo and Billy Arens.
Pardo got on via an infield single before Arens reached on an infield error.
Nolan Overby drove in the run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly before Michael Paul plated Wilt with a double to right center in the fifth.
A five-run third proved to be all that Scimanico (3-0) would need in the nightcap.
The junior southpaw allowed just a second inning single through the right side from Christian Hamlett in his seven innings of work. He struck out eight, walked two and retired the Tigers in order in the third, fourth and sixth.
H-SC made three errors in game two that allowed SU to score six unearned runs, including four of five in that fateful third.
Arens, Daniel Freshley, J.J. McDaniel and Mossman all had RBIs in the third with Arens' driving in Pardo with what proved to be the game-winning run.
Mossman finished his outstanding day 3 for 4 with a double and two singles.
Matt Hinson (0-1) took the game two loss for H-SC. He gave up five runs (one earned) on six hits and one walk in 2 2/3 innings of work.
