Quick Start Not Enough as Hornets Drop Contest to Averett 17-9

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College baseball team scored the first four runs of the game Wednesday evening, but could not stop the bats of Averett University in a 17-9 non-conference loss Wednesday evening in a game played at Lynchburg City Stadium.

Lynchburg jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning, connecting for six hits off Averett starter Timothy Coston. Joe Tomasulo started the offensive spurt with a single through the left side before a Lincoln Evans double put the duo in scoring position. A Coston balk plated the first run of the game.Austin Owens' first career extra-base knock scored Evans on a ringing double to left-center.

Coston settled into the inning by picked up a pair of outs but RBI singles from Joe Rogers and Jonathan Munn expanded the lead to 4-0 heading into the third inning.

Michael Day was great through the first two innings, allowing two hits while striking out one. The Averett lineup was just too strong in the third as the Cougars faced Day a second time through the order, scoring six runs in the frame to take the lead back from the Hornets.

Nic Futrell did the big damage for Averett with a two-RBI double that knotted the game at four. Kyle Vidano, Kevin Alvarez, and Drew Evans drove in a run each during the surge. The Cougars utilized a walk and a pair of Lynchburg errors to make the most of their six hits in the frame.

Averett scored in each inning from the third on, highlighted by four runs in the sixth and three in the eighth. Vidano, J.T. Crowder, and Chatham Currie all posted three hits for the Cougars (16-6) on the evening. Vidano and Futrell each had three RBI while four different Cougars entered the box score with three runs.

Trailing 7-4, Lynchburg added a score in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the deficit back to one as Will Hylton tripled and scored on a Ryan Katona sacrifice fly but that would be as close as the Hornets would get the rest of the way.

Lynchburg was paced by Tomasulo's four hits as Munn added three while Katona led LC with three RBI. Drew Taylor and Hylton each scored twice.

The Hornets (6-13) host another non-conference game Thursday afternoon when Southern Virginia University comes to Lynchburg for a 4 p.m. start.
