Take five.
It took five tries to get the twin bill between John Carroll and No. 16 Baldwin Wallace in. The two teams would only get 15 innings in before Mother Nature had other plans yet again.
John Carroll picked up a big 13-2 win in the first game before falling 18-4 in the second game.
John Carroll's record stands at 19-6, 8-2 OAC with the split while Baldwin Wallace is 17-6, 5-5 OAC.
Game One
John Carroll 13, Baldwin Wallace 2
Junior Aaron Lapaglia fired eight strong innings and the offense provided more than enough runs as John Carroll rolled to a 13-2 win in the first game.
Lapaglia, who pitched two scoreless innings of relief on Saturday, only allowed one run on six hits to improve to 4-0 on the year. The right-hander recorded eight strikeouts on the afternoon.
John Carroll struck for five runs in the third inning to open up a 5-0 lead. Jacob Schriner laced a one-out single to center to start the rally. The Blue Streaks loaded the bases with two outs on a walk from Rob Cifelli and an infield single from Bobby Sabatino. David Crowley drew a bases loaded walk to drive in the first run of the frame. Tyler Gentile and Mark Huddle then hit back-to-back two-run singles to left field.
The Blue Streaks broke the game wide open in the fourth pushing the lead to 9-0. Schriner was at the start of the rally again leading off the inning with a double. James Molnar picked a good time for his first hit of the season ripping a single to center. With two outs, the middle of the lineup came through again. Gentile drilled a two-run double to left field and would come in to score in Huddle's single up the middle.
Baldwin Wallace scored its first run of the game in the fourth. Trent Kaltenbach drove in Eric Murphy with a two-out single.
John Carroll scored its final four runs of the game in the eighth. The Blue and Gold did all of their damage with two outs. David Lykens laced an RBI single to start the scoring. Gentile scored on a wild pitch for the second run of the inning. JCU's final two runs came on a single from Schriner and Lykens coming in to score on an error.
BW's Chase Knodle hit a two-out double in the ninth to plate Alex Green for the Yellow Jacket's other run.
Huddle led the Blue Streaks at the plate. The shortstop went 4-for-6 with three RBIs. Gentile drove in four for the game finishing 2-for-5 with three runs scored.
Game Two
Baldwin Wallace 18, John Carroll 4
Six-Inning Rain-Shortened Game
Baldwin Wallace would rebound to take the second game of the twin bill. Due to the weather the game was shortened to six innings.
Cole Nieto and Mark Zimmerman each hit two-run homers in the third to put the hosts up 4-0.
John Carroll cut its deficit to one in the top of the fourth. Cifelli and Sabatino started the inning with back-to-back singles. Crowley knocked Cifelli in with a single to right field. Gentile reached on an error with Sabatino coming in to score on the play. Crowley scored the third run of the frame but the Yellow Jackets were able to turn a double play in the process.
The JCU diamond men tied the game at four in the fifth. Crowley and Gentile drew back-to-back walks with two outs. Huddle punched a two-out single through the right side to bring in Crowley.
BW responded with a 10-run fifth inning and a four-run sixth to open up the 18-4 lead.
Mark Materise fell to 3-1 with the loss. The sophomore, who beat BW in the winner-takes-all OAC Tournament championship game, allowed 11 runs on 13 hits in four-plus innings of work.
Crowley led JCU at the plate. The junior went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI.
John Carroll has a quick turnaround as the Blue Streaks take on fourth-ranked Heidelberg at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 14 at Schweickert Field.
