Six-Run Eighth Sparks Union to Late-Night Victory at New Paltz

SAUGERTIES, N.Y. - After the start of the game was pushed back over 30 minutes due to a high school game going extras, a 20-minute power outage during the sixth inning, and 16 runs on 27 hits, Union finally came away with the 9-7 victory over New Paltz shortly before midnight on Tuesday night at Cantine Park in Saugerties, New York.

Trailing 6-3 entering the top half of the eighth inning, the Dutchmen offense ignited for six runs in the frame capped off by an Eric Egantwo-run triple to give Union the lead which they would not relinquish. Egan went 3-for-5 in the game to extend his hitting streak to 16 games. He picked up two triples to move into second nationally in all of Division III with seven on the season.

Bill Christopher, who came on to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the 8th inning, ran into trouble in the ninth as New Paltz brought the winning run to the plate with just one out after a couple errors behind him. Christopher was unfazed as the rookie struck out the final two batters of the game to nail down his third save of the season. He had 3 Ks in his 1.1 innings of work.

Jamie Faber pitched two innings of relief to earn his first win of the season. The junior RHP allowed two runs (1 ER) on three hits while striking out two and walking a pair. Freshman Nick Williams went four innings in his second start of the season. Williams gave up three runs on four hits, three walks and four hit batsmen. He punched out three in the outing.

Falling behind 1-0 after the first inning, Union pushed across three runs in the away half of the second to take a 3-1 lead. Harrison GlattZack Twitchell and Anders Goetz all collected RBI singles for the Dutchmen.

The Hawks crossed the plate once in third, once in fifth, twice in the sixth and once again in the seventh to give Union a 6-3 deficit entering the eighth.

Jake Fishman, who entered the game ranked 5th in the country with a .509 batting average, singled to left to begin the top of the eighth for his second hit of the contest. Fishman would come around to score after a failed pickoff attempt sailed wide. Later in the inning, Twitchell picked up his second RBI of the game as he reached on a fielder's choice. Ryan Malone scored on the play to bring Union to within one. After Twitchell stole second, Jake Veslingbrought him home with a single to center to knot the game up at 6-6.

Following a walk to Faber and a wild pitch that advanced Vesling and Faber to second and third, Egan sent a laser to the right field gap to score both runners and give the Dutchmen the 8-6 lead. Union added an insurance run as Kent Curran singled home Egan to put the "U" in front by three.

Faber worked himself into a jam in his second inning of work as he walked in a run to make it 9-7 before Christopher came in to shut the door and give Union their 12th win of the year.

The Dutchmen will host Brockport this Thursday night at Shuttleworth Park with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 PM. Union will then host St. Lawrence this weekend and before the first pitch on Saturday, the Dutchmen will be celebrating their 2013 and 2014 Liberty League Championships with a pregame ceremony. The on-field ceremony is scheduled to start at 12:30pm at Central Park.
