DEFIANCE, Ohio — The Earlham College baseball team was able to finish one contest on Saturday, while the other was stopped due to weather.
Earlham fell 2-1 in the opener of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference series at Defiance before the second contest was halted with the Quakers leading 1-0.
The two teams will complete the second game at noon on Sunday with the series finale to follow. Game two resumes with Matt Barger at the plate for the Quakers in the top of the fifth inning.
The Quakers are in fifth place in the HCAC at 11-9 with a 22-10 overall record.
Eric Elkus gave the Quakers their 1-0 advantage with a RBI single in the second inning. Thomas Rea, Brandon Smalling and Mike Messina each had hits for the Quakers.
Nate Hube started on the mound for the Quakers and surrendered just one hit in four frames with a pair of strikeouts.
In the first game, the Yellow Jackets (15-15, 10-11) scored a run in their initial visit to the plate before adding another in the seventh.
The Quakers loaded the bases in the top of the ninth and picked up a run when Smalling walked.
Brennan Laird led the Quakers with two hits, while Rea had the other.
Howie Smith (4-2) worked seven innings for the Quakers. He gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits with five strikeouts. Garrett York tossed a scoreless eighth.
