Union, N.J. (5/5/15) – Junior Ryan Kelley was 3-for-3 with two RBI as the Kean University baseball team picked up a 9-5 win over York College (Pa.) on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action.
The #5/6 Cougars pounded out 16 hits, with six players recording multi-hit days in the win. Kean now stands with a 33-10 overall mark with one game left on the regular season slate. That game will be home on Thursday against Widener University at 5:30 p.m.
In today's action, each team recorded single runs early as the Cougars scratched across a run in the first on a Sal Taormina RBI single. The Spartans (14-21) evened up the score in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly from Sean Mohollen.
Kean then used a five spot in the fourth to break the tie and take the lead for good. An RBI single from Kelley started things off, followed by a two RBI single up the middle from Taormina. Senior Tom McGuckin kept things going with an RBI double and senior Anthony Fischetti rounded out the scoring with an RBI groundout.
York took advantage of three walks and a wild pitch in the fifth to close the gap to 6-4. Brad Wenzel recorded the only RBI of the inning on a bases loaded walk.
Each team traded single runs between the sixth and seventh before Kean sealed the win with two more on an RBI hustle double from junior Ryan Reitmeyer and an RBI sacrifice bunt from Scott Durkin.
Senior Casey Carothers improved to 4-0 in the predetermined start. Carothers tossed four innings allowing one run and three hits. Classmate Matthew Wagner earned his first save of the year after entering the jam in the fifth and closing out the contest. Wagner allowed one run and four hits in five innings of work.
Offensively junior Michael Kendall had three hits with a double while McGuckin, rookie Matt Krupa and junior Matt Meleo each had two hits in the win. Taormina finished with three RBI to lead the team on the day.
For York, Wenzel was 3-for-3 with an RBI.
