UMHB baseball holds off Pacific 10-9

Belton, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team jumped out to a huge early lead and then held on in the final innings to post a 10-9 victory over Pacific University Sunday in Belton. The Cru moves to 1-4 on the season with the win. The loss evens the Boxers' record at 4-4.

 

Cody Stone ripped a two-run homer in the bottom of the second inning to give UMHB an early lead. The Cru added three more runs in the bottom of the third on a Dakota Parsons RBI single and Chase Burrow's two-run home run. Will Stafford added a two-run blast in the fourth to make it 7-0 UMHB. The Cru made it 9-0 on RBI singles from Stone and Caleb Davis in the bottom of the fifth inning. Pacific scored its first run in the top of the sixth before Jackson Godoy answered with an RBI single in the bottom of the frame. The Boxers exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh to cut the gap to 10-7. It would stay that way into the top of the ninth. Pacific scored a run on a Ben Roquet single and loaded the bases with no outs. The Cru turned a double play as the Boxers scored another run to cut it to 10-9. Cory Farr then got a strikeout to end the threat and the game.

 

Nathan Kent earned the win for UMHB to move to 1-0 on the year and Farr notched his first save. Matt Mazoch had three hits for the Cru and Stone drove in three runs. Nathan Suyematsu took the loss for Pacific to drop to 0-1 on the year. Roquet and Joey Galeno had three hits apiece for the Boxers. The two teams combined for 27 hits in the slugfest.

 

Sunday's game closed out the three-day, three-site Central Texas Weekend Tournament. The Cru will return to action with a 6:00 PM home game against Trinity University Tuesday night. That game will close out a stretch of six home games in five days for UMHB baseball.
