Maryville completes sweep of Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Feb. 14, 2016) – Regional-rival Maryville completed a four-game sweep of the Sewanee baseball Sunday at historic Montgomery Field.

The visiting Scots earned an 11-3 win in the first game and then took the second by a score of 10-3.

The Tigers (0-7) again had trouble on the mound. In the opener, Maryville scored four runs in the first three innings before adding two more in the top of the fifth. The Scots would go on and add four runs in the top of the eight before Sewanee got on the board with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Overall, Maryville finished with 11 hits and had six RBI. Sewanee was undone by four fielding errors and nine earned runs.

The Tigers were led at the plate by Ryan Poole, who blasted a three-run homerun. Additionally, Trey Akins and Jackson Cooper each finished with two hits.

Zack Blonder led Maryville with a 2-for-3 performance and three RBI. Overall, five Scots had hits while seven players scored at least one run.

On the mound, Tiger starter Bryce Benedict was charged with the loss after he allowed seven runs (five earned) in 5.0 innings of work.

Maryville starter Lawson Wishard earned the victory with a seven strikeout, three-hit performance in 7.0 innings.

In the nightcap, Maryville again was powered by its offense. The Scots led 10-2 by the fifth inning and never looked back.

Despite another Poole homer in the bottom of the second, Sewanee still found themselves down 8-2 by that point.

Sewanee will look to earn its first win when the Tigers host LaGrange at 2:00 p.m., Thursday.
