BALTIMORE, Md. – The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team split its two-game series at Johns Hopkins University on S. The Hawks fell to Keystone College, 16-6, in the first game before drawing an 11-11 tie with the host Blue Jays in the night cap.

The Hawks move to a 0-2-1 record and return to action when they travel to Purchase College for a 3:30 p.m. game on Wednesday, March 9. Keystone improves to 2-0 and will next compete in the Stevenson University Tournament from Friday-Saturday, March 4-5. Johns Hopkins rises to 0-1-1 and will host Alvernia University tomorrow at 3 p.m.

Johns Hopkins 11, New Paltz 11

With the bases loaded and two outs against the Blue Jays in the bottom of the second, a miscalculated pitch by sophomore pitcher Ryan Votypka (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) connected with the batter, allowing the Blue Jays to score the first run. Junior shortshop Conor Reynolds knocked a double to left field to bring in two more runners for a 3-0 score before Votypka struck out the Johns Hopkins batter to close out the inning.

New Paltz found its first run in the top of the third as sophomore second baseman Anthony Pantano (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) singled to center field, making room for sophomore catcher Tyler Laco (Commack, N.Y./Commack) to head home as the Hawks trailed the Blue Jays, 3-1.

Johns Hopkins would extend its lead to 7-1 as the Blue Jays scored four runs off two New Paltz errors in the bottom of the third. Senior first baseman Chris Baltera (Commack, N.Y./Commack) earned the Hawks another run on a sacrifice fly from sophomore right fielder Chris Moran (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) but the Blue Jays once again had the advantage as senior second baseman Raul Shah hit a homer for a commanding 10-2 lead heading into the fifth inning.

Despite Johns Hopkins grabbing the first out in the top of the sixth, senior second baseman Kyle Gilligan(Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) and Moran each tallied a hit to land on base before Laco singled to left field to bring home Gilligan. Freshman shortstop Ryan Frost (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) followed with a double to send Moran home and placed Laco in scoring position. Johns Hopkins managed to secure a second out before senior third baseman Andrew DiNardo (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) plated a single that brought home Laco, slicing the deficit to 10-5.

Sophomore left fielder Nick DePietro (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) and Frost would take advantage of a Johns Hopkins fielding error to score two more runs for the Hawks before DiNardo capped off the inning with a final run on a single by sophomore center fielder Jake Williams (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) to cut the score to 10-8.

The Hawks leveled the score to 10-all in the top of the seventh before grabbing their first lead of the night as DePietro walked with the bases loaded, bringing in Williams in the top of the eighth. The Blue Jays tied the score on a homer by Reynolds in the bottom of the inning but both teams would remain scoreless in the ninth inning as the game was brought to an end due to darkness.

The Hawks hammered out 17 hits, including six hits in the six-run sixth inning outburst. Leading the way offensively was Williams who went 6-of-4 at the plate with one RBI and two doubles while Pantano was 6-of-2 and tallied three RBIs. DePietro, Laco, and Frost each recorded two runs for the Hawks.

Reynolds and Shah led the way for the Blue Jays as the pair went 4-of-2 at the plate with three RBIs and notched one homer apiece. Shah concluded the game with three runs while Reynolds had one run.
