Tigers fall at Covenant, 7-5

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. (March 1, 2015) – Despite three hits from Jackson Cooper and three other Tigers with two hits, the Sewanee baseball team fell at regional-rival Covenant, 7-5, Tuesday, at the Covenant Baseball Field.

The Tigers are now 1-14 overall while the Scots improved to 8-5 overall.

Sewanee opened the game as Cooper singled in Josh Roberts for the game's first run. Covenant answered back in the bottom half of the inning as Caleb Bloye singled in Luke Harvey.

The scored remained 1-1 into the top of the third inning as Cooper ripped an RBI triple to left center that plated Tyler Minkkinen.

Unfortunately, Covenant responded with four runs on three hits in the bottom of the third.

The Tigers pulled to within a run as Trey Akins singled to left in which Derek Hullings scored.

However, ahead 6-4 Covenant pushed its advantage to 8-4 in the bottom of the sixth as Bloye crushed a two-out double to right field, which scored Devin Cerrato and Forrest Hunter.

Sewanee added one final run as Tony Dykes homered in the top of the eighth off of Alex Kerr.

Despite the homerun by Dykes, Kerr earned the save after he gave up one run and struck out two. Covenant starter Ryan Gosney took the win after he allowed four runs and nine hits while striking out six in 5.0 innings.

Sewanee starter Bryce Benedict was charged with the loss after he allowed seven runs (four earned) and 10 hits in 6.0 innings.

Along with Cooper's three hits and three RBI, Dykes added two hits and an RBI. Minkkinen and Hullings also added two hits.

Sewanee returns to action with a three-game series at Rhodes starting Saturday.
