Hayden Tsutsui Hits for the Cycle in Loss to Carthage

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Hayden Tsutsui (Sr./Northridge, Calif./Chatsworth) capped his torrid spring break by hitting for the cycle—a single, double, triple, and home run in the same game—but it was not enough to prevent the Carleton College baseball team from dropping its Arizona finale by a 14-4 tally.

Tsutsui doubled in the first inning, belted a three-run home run in the second, tripled in the fourth, and singled in the seventh. He hit safely in all 11 games he's played in Tucson, batting at a .558 clip.

The home run was the 20th of Tsutsui's career, second-most in recorded team history. (Initial research found no mentions of a Carleton baseball player previously hitting for the cycle. However, the sport began at Carleton in the 1880s, and much of the school's baseball history has not been chronicled.)

Trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the second inning, Carleton scored 4 two-out runs. Griffin Bolte (So./Portland, Ore./Lincoln) tripled to open the frame, and Jordan Zoellmer (Sr./Richfield, Minn./Richfield) drew a one-out walk. A popout later, Tsutsui smashed his first home run of the season over the left-field wall. Willie Freimuth (Jr./Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee) followed with a double to left center and scored on Austin Heuer's (Fy./Elk River, Minn./Elk River) single.

The lead was short-lived, though, as the Red Men scored in five of the next six innings totaling a dozen runs.

Carleton returns home and is slated to visit Bethany Lutheran College on Monday, March 28 for a single 3:00 p.m. contest.
