REDLANDS — Will Martel went the distance with an outstanding performance on the hill and the Occidental baseball team bounced back with 14 hits and a seven-run fifth-inning rally to beat Redlands in Game 2 of a three-game series for first place, cruising past the Bulldogs 9-2 on Saturday.
Season Impact: The Tigers improve to 11-3 in SCIAC and one game in front of Redlands, which falls to 10-4.
Oxy, which has won 13 of its last 14 dating back to Feb. 20, is ranked No. 22 in the latest ABCA National Poll and has an overall record of 16-5.
Martel gave up just two earned runs, with four strikeouts, in all nine innings pitched.
All nine position players got hits on Saturday for Oxy.
Eamon McNeil led the way, going 3 for 5 with four RBIs and a run scored. Jack Brancheau was 2 for 4 with three runs scored and an RBI, and Jared Baur went 2 for 4 with an RBI, a run scored and a double.
