The Carthage College baseball team (7-7, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) wrapped up its 12-game spring trip to Tucson Invitational on Eastern Sunday, March 27 with a 13-8 win over Middlebury College at the Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, Ariz.
Middlebury scored two in the first and one in the second to take a 3-0 lead. Carthage came up with six runs in the bottom of second, all unearned, to take a 6-3 lead. The Red Men added two runs in the third for an 8-3 advantage. After Middlebury scored two in the fourth to cut the lead to 8-5, Carthage scored three in the bottom half to go up, 11-5. The Red Men tacked on another run in the fifth to make it a 12-5 game, but the Panthers tacked on a run the sixth to
Brandon Hrdlicka (1-0), in relief of Joe Nelson, picked up the win. Hrdlicka allowed three runs, none earned, on five hits and a walk over four and one-third innings. Luc DiMaso pitched the seventh and eighth and Luke Mentkowski the ninth.
Carthage collected 16 hits, with John Burkiewicz going three-for-four with an RBI. Jordan Wiegold and A.J. Kaprelian each had two hits and two RBI. Carthage opens its CCIW-schedule on Saturday, April 2 with a Noon doubleheader versus North Park University at the Holmgren Athletic Complex in Chicago.
