ALBION, Mich. – The Heidelberg University baseball team hung on for a 9-8 win against Albion College on Tuesday on the road. The Student Princes built a 9-1 lead and were able to stymie a late rally by the Britons to escape with the non-conference win. Evan Long led the Berg with a 3-for-5 day with four runs driven in, including a two-run home run.

Heidelberg improved to 9-10 with the win while Albion fell to 7-9.

Heidelberg opened the scoring in the top of the second when RBIs from Long and T.J. Harkness highlighted a three-run inning.

After Albion responded with one in the bottom of the frame, the Student Princes quickly extended their lead back out when Joey Wenning hit a two-run double to make it a 5-1 lead for the Berg.

In the top of the fifth, it was Long and Harkness yet again getting the job done at the plate, as they both recorded another RBI each to make the score 7-1 in favor of the Student Princes.

The biggest blast of the day came in the top of the seventh, when Long drove a two-run home run to right field to give Heidelberg a commanding 9-1 edge.

Albion was able to get to the Heidelberg bullpen in the seventh, scoring five runs, which included a grand slam, to make the score 9-6.

The Britons threatened again in the 9th. After Anthony Hajdu retired the first batter of the inning, Albion was able to load the bases and score one on a bases-loaded walk, cutting the Berg lead to just two. An RBI groundout would cut the lead all the way down to one before Cory Jacobs was able to close out the game, earning his third save of the season.

Alex Simun (1-1) picked up the win after turning in a quality start, going six innings while allowing just three hits and one run.

UP NEXT

Heidelberg will make another trip up to Michigan on Wednesday when they travel to Adrian for a non-conference contest with the Bulldogs. That game is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m.
