Hope Baseball Drops MIAA Doubleheader At Alma

The Hope College baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at Alma on Tuesday, losing 6-1 and 7-3.

The Flying Dutchmen fell to 6-9 overall and 1-3 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play.

In the first game, the Flying Dutchmen totaled five hits — all singles – including a third-inning RBI hit from shortstop Brady VanderWeele of Kalamazoo, Michigan (Parchment HS) that plated third baseman Nicholas Lepore on Clinton Township, Michigan (Warren De LaSalle HS).

Alma tied the score at 1-1 with a solo home run in its half of inning, then added three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth. Four of the runs were unearned.

In the second game, second baseman Michael Barnett of Saline, Michigan (Saline hS) collected two hits and two RBIs for the Flying Dutchmen. He had run-scoring singles in a two-run fifth and a one-run ninth.

Leftfielder Ryan Konkle of Marshall, Michigan (Marshall HS), first baseman Landon Brower of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian HS), and rightfielder JP Batts of Spring Lake, Michigan (Spring Lake HS) each had two hits.

The Flying Dutchmen return to action on Thursday, March 31 when they host Calvin for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
