UW-La Crosse Remains Undefeated in WIAC Play

La Crosse, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader sweep of UW-Oshkosh Saturday afternoon at Copeland Park, winning 7-1 in the opener and 15-2 in seven innings in the nightcap.  The Eagles improve to 16-5 overall and 6-0 in the WIAC while the Titans drop to 8-11-1 overall and 3-3 in the conference.

UWL, ranked 12th on this week's D3baseball.com Top-25 Poll and 13th in the American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball Top-30 Poll, is 6-0 in the WIAC for the first time since 1997.
 
Caleb Boushley (4-0) earned the win in the opener for UWL, pitching his second straight complete-game.  He went 9.0 innings Saturday, allowing six hits and one run while recording a career-high 10 strikeouts.  Boushley, who has pitched at least 8.0 innings in four of his five starts this season, earned the complete-game victory in the Eagles' 10-0 win in eight innings over UW-Platteville April 9.
 
UWL took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Joel Zyhowski doubled to start the game and advanced to third on Alex Cordova's groundout to second.  Taylor Kohlwey followed with an RBI double to score Zyhowski for a 1-0 lead and extend his hitting streak to 23 games dating back to last season.  Justin Anderson then walked and Kohlwey came in on Carter Hoffman's two-out single to make it 2-0.
 
The Eagles added a pair of runs in the bottom of the second for a 4-0 lead. Nate Heili reached on an infield single with one out and stole second. He moved to third on Zyhowski's groundout and scored on Cordova's two-out two-run home run to left center field.
 
UW-Oshkosh cut the lead to 4-1 in the top of the fourth on Robbie Kleman's solo home run to left field, but UWL responded with an unearned run in the bottom of the inning.  Travis Buxton-Verstegen singled to start the inning and advanced to second on a balk. After a fly out for the first out of the inning, Buxton-Verstegen went to third on a failed pickoff attempt and throwing error by UW-Oshkosh.  He then scored to make it 5-1 as Heili reached on a Titans' fielding error.
 
UWL added a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth.  Anderson singled to start the frame and advanced to second on Hoffman's sacrifice bunt.  Alex Brown knocked in Anderson with an RBI double down the left field line to make it 6-1.  After a UW-Oshkosh pitching change, pinch-runner Sam Prissel scored on Buxton-Verstegen's RBI single to left center field.
 
UWL totaled 13 hits in Saturday's opener as Anderson, Brown, Buxton-Verstegen and Heili each had two.  All nine starters recorded at least one hit.
 
Peter Jewell (1-2) suffered the loss for UW-Oshkosh, going 7.1 innings, allowing 11 hits, seven runs (six earned) and one walk while recording five strikeouts.  The Titans finished with six hits with Kleman, Tyler Kozlowski and Dylan Ott each having two.
 
In the nightcap, UWL took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Cordova and Kohlwey walked and both advanced on a passed ball.  Anderson followed with a two-run single knocking in Cordova and Kohlwey.  UW-Oshkosh cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the third as Kleman drew a bases-loaded walk to score Ott.  UWL responded with a run in the bottom of the third as Anderson doubled and scored on Brown's single.

The Titans made it 3-2 in the top of the fourth inning with Alex Koch leading off the inning with a double and scoring on Jack Paulson's two-out single to center field.  UW-Oshkosh left the bases-loaded in the third and fourth innings and finished with 10 left-on-base overall in the game.

The Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the fourth for a 5-2 lead.  Zyhowski singled with out and advanced to second as Cordova reached on a Titans' fielding error.  After a UW-Oshkosh pitching change, Kohlwey singled to knock in Zyhowski for a 4-2 advantage.  Anderson followed with a sacrifice fly to score Cordova.

UWL tallied 10 runs on six hits and one UW-Oshkosh error in the bottom of the sixth.  Brown and Buxton-Verstegen each had two-run singles for the Eagles.

Troy Kenkel (4-1) picked up the win for UWL, going 4.0 innings, allowing six hits, two runs and three walks while recording two strikeouts.  Logan Mallek earned his first save, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing one hit and one walk with three three strikeouts.

UWL totaled 13 hits with seven starters recording at least one hit and one run.  Brown went 3-for-4 with three RBI while Anderson finished 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs.  Zyhowski, Kohlwey and Heili each had two hits with Zyhowski and Cordova scoring three runs each.  Kohlwey extended his hitting streak to 24-games in Saturday's nightcap.

Colan Treml (2-4) took the loss for UW-Oshkosh, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing six hits, five runs (four earned) and three walks with two strikeouts.  Seven different players had a hit for the Titans.

The teams will play another doubleheader Sunday, April 17 starting at noon at Copeland Park.
