THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Baseball team recorded a pair of victories on Saturday afternoon as the team defeated the Mount St. Vincent Dolphins as the road team on the Reinhart Baseball Field. The Privateers won the opening contest by a 15-6 score, before tallying a 12-1 victory in game two.
Four players ended the day with at least four RBIs, as senior Paul Woodburn (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown)was 5-for-10 on the day with two doubles and four RBIs. Sophomore Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville)was also 5-for-10 and drove in five runs, including his second grand slam of the season, he also led the team with seven runs scored.
Sophomore Stephen Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) also picked up four RBIs as he went 3-for-6 and was also hit by four pitches on the afternoon. Freshman Joe Scerra (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) drove in four runs as he collected two hits on the day.
In addition to Deddo's seven runs scored, Semler also crossed the plate on five occasions. Junior Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) scored five runs and drove in a pair, while seniorKevin Monahan (Seaford, N.Y./MacArthur) scored three runs and also reached base on five occurrences.
While hitting was what led to Maritime's 27 runs on the scoreboard, the pitching was not to be outdone. In the second game, sophomore Anthony D'Ancona (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) tossed a complete-game one hitter as he struck out five over his seven innings of work.
Freshman A.J. Ammirati (Queens, N.Y./Construction) got the day started with a six-inning outing as he fanned eight batters en route to a game one victory. Classmate Nick Fortunato (Coram, N.Y./Longwood)came on to pitch the final three innings of game one and earned a nine-out save.
In the opener, Maritime got an early baserunner but was unable to score in the top of the first inning. The first three batters reached in the bottom of the first inning, but Ammirati struck out the next batter before getting the next Dolphin to ground into a double-play constructed nicely by sophomore Joe DiLeo (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann).
Scerra drove in the opening run of the game as he singled up the middle to plate McLaughlin and put Maritime ahead by a 1-0 score. Mount St. Vincent answered in the bottom of the second with a three-run inning to take a 3-1 advantage, then added a fourth run in the third inning.
Maritime's bats woke up again in the fifth inning as the damage was all done with two outs. Deddo reached on a walk, followed by Semler getting plunked by a pitch, McLaughlin walked to load the bases, to bring up Woodburn. The Maritime centerfielder drove a three-run double into the right centerfield gap to even the game at four.
Ammirati retired the Dolphins in order in both the fifth and sixth innings to send the game to the top of the seventh.
Deddo got the rally started again with a base knocked, followed by Semler doubling Deddo home. McLaughlin then exchanged places with Semler with another run-scoring double. Woodburn reached on a tapper that was fielded by the pitched. Two batters later, freshman Anthony Vieto (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) grounded out to plate the third run of the inning and give Maritime a 7-4 advantage.
The Privateers added two in the eight as Deddo collected an RBI triple to plate Monahan, who had walked earlier in the inning. Semler was up next and hit a sacrifice fly to right field as Maritime had opener a 9-4 lead.
In the top of the ninth, Maritime added six more runs with the big blow coming off the bat of Deddo, who launched his second grand slam, of the year.
Fortunato, who had come on in the seventh and set down the first six batters he faced, yielded two runs in the bottom of the ninth as the Privateers hung on for the 15-6 victory.
In game two, D'Ancona was the headliner, as the righty took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before yielding a clean single with one out in the frame. The effort came nearly two years to the day since Maritime's last no-hitter, which took place on April 9 when Trevor Cannella '14, tossed a no-no against St. Joseph's (LI) in 2014.
Before D'Ancona could take the mound, he was spotted a five-run lead as Monahan walked, Deddo singled, followed by a base knock from Semler to plate the pair of baserunners. McLaughlin doubled, then senior Bruce Tyler (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) walked to load the bases. Senior Justin Baierlein(Richmond Hill, N.Y./High School for CTEA) reached on an error, allowing Semler to score, followed by Scerra collecting an RBI on a groundout.
Freshman Jimmy Guerriero (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park) walked on a 3-1 pitch, to bring Monahan back to the place and drive in one on a base hit to start Maritime off with a 5-0 lead.
D'Ancona took the hill and got the first three out with ease. In the top of the second, Maritime plated four more runs as McLaughlin, Woodburn and Scerra all collected RBIs in the inning.
After retiring the side in order in the second, D'Ancona walked the second batter in the third, but escaped the frame without allowing any damage. One batter reached in both the fourth and fifth innings, but the crafty right-hander did not waver as he continued to mow down the Mount St. Vincent lineup.
Maritime scored one more in the fourth inning to take a 10-0 lead, and then scored two more in the seventh as sophomore Connor Alwan (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) walked with the bases loaded and Baierlein converted on an RBI groundout to put the Privateers ahead by a dozen heading into the bottom of the inning.
D'Ancona walked the first man he faced in the inning, then got a pop up for the first out. He then hit a batter to put two on with no outs, as his pitch count elevated over 100. The next batter then struck the first hit of the game into left field for the first knock of the afternoon to load the bases.
A highlight-reel grab by Tyler behind first base was the second out of the inning, but D'Ancona walked the next batter as he lost the shutout with a run getting pushed across the plate. The next batter lined out to shortstop of the first pitch of the at bat to end the ballgame and give Maritime its second win of the day.
