RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College baseball team completed a season sweep of Mount St. Joseph University (MSJ) on Tuesday, defeating the Lions 8-3 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) action at Sadler Stadium on Tuesday.

The Quakers rounded out their first HCAC sweep of the season as Earlham beat MSJ 10-7 on the road on March 22 and edging the Lions 4-1 at home last Tuesday.

Earlham got on the board in the bottom of the first as senior Brandon Smalling singled home juniorNate Lynch for his 26th RBI of the season. The Quakers would add three more runs in the second on an RBI-double from junior Matt Barger and a two-RBI single from junior Brennan Laird.

One run would cross the plate for both teams in the third, making the score 5-1. The Lions (18-12, 7-10 HCAC) touched up freshman Walter Talcott for a run in the fourth and fifth innings, cutting the deficit in half.

One inning later, Smalling delivered another RBI hit, a double scoring two runs to put Earlham ahead by four. The Quakers added the game's last run in the eighth.

Talcott earned the win, improving to 7-0 on the year and tying the program's record for wins in a season. Talcott allowed two earned runs on seven hits while striking out six in 7.2 innings of work. Sophomore Matt Mathies and junior Howie Smith did not allow a hit in the final 1.1 innings in relief.

Smalling finished 3-4 on the day with four RBIs and a walk to lead the Quakers offensively. Five other Earlham players each recorded one hit. The Quakers swiped seven bases in the game including two from Lynch and Laird.

Austin Richey took the loss for MSJ, allowing five runs (two earned) in three innings of work.

Earlham improves to 21-8 overall and 11-6 in HCAC competition with the win. The Quakers will face Wabash College tomorrow (Wednesday) at Sadler Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
