Rockford Defeats Carthage, 14-10, on April 20

The Carthage College baseball team (13-14, 6-6 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) lost to non-conference opponent Rockford University (14-14), 12-9, 14-10, on Wednesday, April 20 at Rivets Stadium in Loves Park, Ill.

Carthage scored three runs in the top of the first inning, and Rockford answered with three of its own in the bottom half to tie the game.  The Red Men scored on an RBI-single by Zach Wade, a sacrifice fly by Reed Hero and an RBI-double by A,J. Kaprelian.  With Brandon Hrdlicka on the hill for the Red Men, Carthage took a 4-3 lead in the second on an RBI-double by Jordan Wiegold.  The Regents tied the game, 4-4, in the bottom of the second.

The Red Men took a 6-4 lead in the fourth on a Jared Helmich sacrifice fly and a Reed Hero single, but Rockford scored eight times in the bottom half to take a 12-6 lead.  Relief pitcher Dalton Sjong walked the first three batters in the inning.  A throwing by shortstop Myles Farley followed, allowing two runs to score.  Chris Carlson and Josh Cooper followed with RBI-singles, and C. J. Casey replaced Sjong.  A wild pitch scored the fifth run of the inning, and Robert Smith then hit a two-run single.  Frantini hit a two-run double for the eighth run of the frame.

Carthage got a run a back in the fifth to make it 12-7 and scored three more in the seventh to close the gap to two runs, 12-10.  John Burkiewicz singled home the first two runs in the seventh, and Farley added an RBI-single.  The Regents scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to close out the scoring at 14-10.

A.J. Kaprelian went three-for-five with an RBI for the Red Men, who totaled 16 hits.  Andrew Hunt for five-for-five for the Regents with three runs scored.

Nickolas Hutten (1-0), the second-of-five Rockford pitchers, was credited with the win, Tyler Joyce earned his first save.  Dalton Sjong (1-3), the second-of-six Carthage hurlers, took the loss.

Carthage opens a three-game series against CCIW-opponent Elmhurst College on Saturday, April 23 with a Noon doubleheader at Butterfield Park in Elmhurst, Ill.
