Appleton, Wis. – Keystone College opened the 2016 NCAA Division III World Series with a convincing, 16-3 victory over St. John Fisher on Saturday at the Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium, stretching its winning streak to 11 games in the process. The Giants, who are a perfect, 8-0 in postseason play this spring, improve to 38-9 overall and match their fourth-highest win total in program history, which came in 2011, the year of Keystone's only other appearance in the World Series.
Keystone will take on the La Roche College (42-10) on Sunday at 1:15 p.m., CST on Sunday in a critical winner's bracket showdown of Pennsylvania teams. The Redhawks defeated the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater 5-3 in Saturday's other Pool B opening round game. St. John Fisher will meet Wisconsin-Whitewater (35-15) on Saturday night in an elimination contest.
Brandon Eady (Bowie, MD/DeMatha Catholic) went 3-3 with three RBI and three runs scored, Robbie Nardelli (Eynon, PA/Valley View) was 2-3 with three RBI and also scored three times, while Chris Triano (Greenwich, CT/Rye) and Alex Herceg (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) drove in a pair of runs each as Keystone enjoyed its fourth-best offensive output of the season.
The run support was more than enough for Giants' starter Felix Baez (San Juan, PR/Colegio Presbiteriano de Puerto Nuevo), who improved to 10-2 on the year after scattering four hits over six shutout innings while picking up five strikeouts on the afternoon. With a pair of strikeouts in the second inning, the senior right-hander broke Keystone's single-season record for strikeouts as Baez now has 117 K's this spring, surpassing the previous mark of 114 established by Rob Rogers in 2013. Baez also matched Keystone's record for pitching victories in a season, tying the mark held by four different Giants.
Keystone took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning of Saturday's contest as Austin Chaszar (Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown Regional) scored on a wild pitch before Nardelli came home on a Herceg double to the gap in left center. The Giants pushed their lead to three runs in the visitor's fifth when Nate Ross (Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva) hit an opposite field single to bring home Eady.
The Giants broke the game open by scoring nine runs on five hits and three costly errors by the Cardinals in the top of the sixth inning. Chaszar scored Keystone's fourth run on an error before Herceg delivered an RBI base hit. Eady then cleared the bases with a three-run double before coming home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Billy Nelson (Moscow, PA/North Pocono). Nardelli put the exclamation point on the inning with a three-run home run over the left field wall, his fifth of the year, to push the Giants' lead to 12-0.
In the seventh inning, Triano delivered a two-run single through the left side before Eady came home on a wild pitch to extend Keystone's advantage to 15 runs.
St. John Fisher, the Mid-Atlantic Region champions, broke up Keystone's shutout bid in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI double by Cody Wiktorski, but the Giants got the run back in the top of the eighth inning when Randy Torres (Bronx, NY/All Hallows) came home on a balk.
Nate Roethel and Wiktorski added RBI singles for Cardinals in the home eighth and ninth innings, respectively, to close out the scoring.
Dan Maguire (Ocean Township, NJ/Ocean Township) took over for Baez in the seventh inning and worked two innings on the mound, yielding two runs on four hits while Jeffrey Ledesma (Yonkers, NY/Norman Thomas) yielding one run on two hits while fanning a pair of batters in the ninth inning.
St. John Fisher starter Stephen Lewis (7-1) suffered his first loss of the season after yielding eight runs on 10 hits in five innings of work while the Giants forced the Cardinals to use three other arms out of the bullpen to close out the game.
Wiktorski went 3-5 with two RBI to lead St. John Fisher's offense while Evan Ryan chipped in with a pair of hits in the loss.
