NEWARK, Del. – The University of Scranton baseball team banged out 15 hits on Sunday, but could not contain Widener's bats in a 21-13 loss to the Pride at the University of Delaware.
The Royals (2-1) had a 4-1 lead after the top of the third, but Widener (3-0) scored 12 times in the bottom of the frame and added four more runs in the fourth to take control of the game. The Pride finished with 20 hits, helping them overcome five errors that led to 10 unearned runs scored by the Royals.
Scranton was led by junior outfielder Ryan Coonahan (Oreland, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.), who came off the bench to bang out three hits, drive in two runs and score once. Senior second baseman Patrick O'Dell (Phoenixville, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) had two hits, two RBIs and a run, and senior outfielder Anthony Simone (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley Senior) and junior catcher Kevin Nolan (Ossining, N.Y./Fordham Prep) both had two hits and scored twice.
Freshman first baseman Kevin Haag (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining/Bridgton Academy) singled, doubled and drove in two runs, junior outfielder Tommy Trotter (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) tripled, drove in two runs and scored one, and junior shortstop Justin Howell (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills) had a double and scored a run for the Royals.
Scranton will be back in action on Saturday, March 4, when they travel to Owings Mills, Md., to take on Stevenson at 11 a.m. and Keystone at 2:30 p.m. at Stevenson.
