Wesley comes back in walk-off fashion against St. Joseph’s

DOVER, Del. – It took extra innings, but the Wesley College baseball team picked up a come-from-behind 7-6 victory in 10 innings over the St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) Bears on Saturday.

Wesley took the early one-run lead in the bottom of the first when Trey Mears came around from second to score on a throwing error by St. Joseph's Francis Rapp.

St. Joseph's took the lead in the top of the third inning when John Condon hit a two-RBI single through the right side. Wesley got those runs back in the bottom half of the inning to regain the lead. After Michael Piccirillo's single and Will Barton's double to lead off the inning, Chris Seibert hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Piccirillo from third. Mike Calvarese then followed with a single to left field that scored Barton.

St. Joseph's retook the lead in the fourth when Kevin Linitz hit a two-out double that scored Adam Schwartz and Connor Pasetti. St. Joseph's tacked on another run to move ahead 5-3 in the seventh inning when Rapp hit a sacrifice fly that scored Linitz.

Wesley came back to tie the game at five in the bottom of the eighth. After a Calvarese one-out walk and a passed ball, Cody Dmiterchik doubled down the left field line to score Calvarese from second. Following a balk on the St. Joseph's pitcher, Dmiterchik scored from third on a wild pitch.

St. Joseph's once again took the lead in the ninth when Rapp singled through the right side to score Pasetti from third base.

Wesley forced extra innings in the bottom of the ninth when Seibert knocked a two-out single up the middle past the diving shortstop to score Mears from second, who also reached on a single.

After a scoreless top of the tenth, two straight two-out walks brought up Barton with a runner in scoring position. Barton crushed a game-winning single to the left field fence that brought Cody Ellis home from second base to give the Wolverines the walk-off win.

Barton led the Wolverines with a three-hit day while Seibert and Piccirillo also added two hits in the victory. Mears stole four times while scoring twice.

Alex Marrs pitched the ninth and tenth frames to pick up his third win of the year. Marrs struck out three and only surrendering a walk and an unearned run.

The Wolverines (5-1) will wrap up the three-game series with the Bears on Sunday in a doubleheader. The first game of the twin bill starts at 11 a.m. from Bob Reed Field.
