DOVER, Del. – The Wesley College baseball team took one of the two games on Sunday from St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) Bears in a non-conference doubleheader.
The Wolverines dropped the opener of the doubleheader 5-4 to the Bears.
The Bears got out to a quick start in the first game pushing across four in the top of the first inning. The Wolverines responded with three in the bottom half of the first. Will Barton got the game started for the Wolverines with a leadoff home run over the left field fence. After a hit by pitch and a Trey Mears double put runners in scoring position, Chris Seibert hit a two-run double to the deep center field to cut the Bear lead to 4-3.
The Bears pushed a run across in the second inning to take a 5-3 lead. William Foster knocked a single up the middle with two outs in the bottom of the third to score Seibert from third to make it a one-run game, but that would be the last run the Wolverines would get in the first game.
Sam Meck had a solid showing on the mound for the Wolverines following the first two innings. Meck struck out 10 batters and only walked one in seven innings of work.
In a game that was a pitcher's duel until the final frame, the Wolverines outlasted the Bears 4-3 in the finale of the doubleheader.
The Wolverines scored first in the bottom of the second inning when Michael Piccirillo hit a RBI single to left field to score Alex Marrs.
The Bears tied the game at one in the top of the fourth when Anthony DeFillippo scored from third on a wild pitch.
Following a John Joines infield single and a sacrifice bunt by Leslie Kennedy in the bottom of the fifth, Cody Dmiterchik rifled a double to left center field to score Joines from second base to give the Wolverines the 2-1 advantage.
The Bears overtook the Wolverines in the top of the seventh inning when Jim Kennedy hit a two-run home run to right field.
The Wolverines fought back in the bottom half of the seventh inning. With two outs, back-to-back singles put runners on first and second for Seibert. Seibert crushed a double to right field to clear the bases and give the Wolverines the come-from-behind win.
Mears, Dmiterchik and Seibert each had two-hit performances in the night cap of the doubleheader.
Cody Simet earned his second win of the season. Simet pitched a complete game with three strikeouts while no allowing a walk.
The walk-off win in the second game of the doubleheader was the Wolverines third comeback win of the young season after trailing in the seventh inning or later.
The Wolverines (6-2) will be back in action on Tuesday, March 7 when they head up to Lancaster, Pa. to face the Lancaster Bible Chargers. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
