AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Baseball erupted for 13 runs on 12 hits in the top of the fifth inning on their way to a one-sided 15-3 win over Curry College Monday afternoon at Winter Haven Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing by two runs (3-1) heading into the fifth inning, the Beacons offense came alive in a huge way as they pound hit-after-hit off the Colonels pitching staff.  The one-sided victory improved the Beacons Florida record to 3-0, with yesterday's game against Nichols College in the books as a rain out.

Sal Frosceno (Derby, Conn.) had his best day at the plate for UMass as the outfielder went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.  Eddie Riley (Quincy, Mass.) was also solid in his five at-bats, as the sophomore combined for two hits, three RBI, and three runs scored.

On the hill, junior Steve Witkowski (Pittsfield, Mass.) collected his first win of the year, after going an inning in relief.  The Beacons saw Joey Rogers (Dighton, Mass.) go the first four frames.  Rogers, who made his collegiate debut on the hill for UMass, allowed two runs, both earned, on five hits, and had four strikeouts.

The Beacons notched the first run of the contest in the top of the second, but were quickly countered in the bottom of the inning, as the Colonels took a 2-1 lead.  That score remained for the next two innings, until the explosion that was the fifth inning occurred. 

Senior DH Dan Mantoni (Northbridge, Mass.) collected the only extra base hit in the inning, as he ripped a two RBI double to left center to close out the huge frame.  The Beacons used small ball to extend their lead in the fifth inning, as they tacked on 11 singles. 

After the inning, Curry would score just one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning, but by then the game was too far out of reach.  The final run of the day came in the top half of the seventh when Nick Cotraro (Beverly, Mass.) ripped his first double of the season to center field, which plated Riley.

BY THE NUMBERS

• The Beacons 13 runs marked the most since their 13-9 win over Salem State University last season
• The 13 runs in the fifth inning was the most runs scored in a single inning since March 19, 2005 when they scored 11 against Finlandia University
• In total the Beacons saw 19 field players and six pitchers all appear in Monday's win
• UMass Boston totaled 18 hits and saw a total of 44 at-bats
• The Beacons pitching staff combined for 11 strikeouts and allowed just seven hits
• UMass Boston has now won two straight over Curry College and have combined for eight wins since their first meeting in 1995
