CONWAY, Ark. (March 18, 2017) – In its first road Southern Athletic Association (SAA) series of the season, the Sewanee baseball team split a doubleheader at Hendrix, Saturday.
The Tigers are now 10-9 overall and 3-1 in SAA play. Sewanee won the first game against the Warriors 4-3 while Hendrix rallied in the nightcap for a 5-2 victory.
Game One – Sewanee 4 --- Hendrix 3
For the fifth straight game, Sewanee starter Drew Mancuso was outstanding. Mancuso won his fifth straight start after he tossed 7.1 innings of two-run ball. Mancuso allowed only eight hits while striking out five.
Right-handed reliever Daniel McDonald then pitched the last 2.1 innings to earn his first save.
Sewanee scored first when freshman Max Murray scored on a wild pitch by Hendrix starter Taylor Barker. After Hendrix took a 2-1 lead on a two-run homerun by Drew Judson, Sewanee answered back in the top of the fourth. With Mancuso on third, Derek Hullings drove in the Sewanee starter on a hard hit ball to second. Three batters later, Beau Allen scored when Murray drove a deep fly ball to right field.
Sewanee added a much need insurance run in the top of the seventh when Jared Demkowicz drove home Ryan Poole.
Hendrix had one last chance to tie or win the game in the bottom of the ninth however, McDonald got Judson to pop up to second for the final out.
Game One – Hendrix 5 --- Sewanee 2
After Sewanee took an early 1-0 lead when Trey Akins drove home Clayton Market in the top of the third, Hendrix answered back when Wyatt Hogan hit a homerun to left field in the bottom of the fourth.
Hendrix took the lead in the bottom of the sixth when the Warriors scored three runs on no hits. The home team was helped by two costly Sewanee errors in the inning.
The Tigers did score once in the final inning after Mancuso singled in Demkowicz. Unfortunately, pitch hitter Tony Dykes flew out to center for the final out.
Sewanee and Hendrix will conclude their three-game series with the rubber game at noon, Sunday.
