The Pacific University baseball team snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 4-2 win over Puget Sound on Saturday in Hillsboro.
The Boxers (9-10, 4-9 NWC) scored twice in the third and added another in the fifth for an early 3-0 lead. Starting pitcher Spencer Backstrom (Bellingham, Wash.), in just his second start, allowed seven hits, a run (earned) and struck out five in the win. Reliever Cody Ahlgrimm (Colorado Springs, Colo.) recorded the final two outs for his first save.
Three-different players – Josh Keithly (Mission Viejo, Calif.), Kurtis Kloke (San Bernardino, Calif.) and Charlie Dietrich (Aberdeen, Wash.) each had two hits to lead a nine-hit attack for Pacific. Dylan Wright had a two-RBI single in the third for the first two runs of the game. Kloke added a RBI double in the fifth and Shane Suyama (Beaverton, Ore.) had a RBI sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Puget Sound (6-10, 2-5 NWC) left 11 runners on base with Ricardo Barraza having a pair of hits in the loss. The Loggers left two runners on base in four including the ninth to end the game.
The series will wrap up on Sunday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Chuck Bafaro Stadium on the campus of Pacific University in Forest Grove.
