CORTLAND, N.Y. - Sean Getman (Oneonta) hit a go-ahead three-run double as part of a four-run eighth inning as Cortland rallied to win its home opener versus SUNY Polytechnic, 5-3.
The Red Dragons, ranked first nationally by the ABCA and second by D3baseball.com, improved to 17-3 with the win. Cortland is scheduled to host Brockport in a three-game series this Friday and Saturday, but weather may end up moving the Friday game to Sunday.
Down 3-1, Cortland started its comeback with a Jack Massa (Shoremah/Shoreham-Wading River) leadoff, pinch-hit double. Patrick Schetter (Beacon) walked, and Justin Teague (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) reached on a bunt single to load the bases.
Getman then ripped a pinch-hit double to center. Massa scored easily, but Schetter stumbled around third and barely beat the throw to home standing up. During the play, Teague kept running from first and slid in to home only a second or two after Schetter crossed the plate for the go-ahead run. Pinch runner Joe Tardif (Cutchogue/Mattituck) moved to third on a Matt Michalski (Buffalo/St. Francis) sac bunt and scored on Colin BeVard's (Syracuse/West Genesee) RBI single up the middle.
The teams were scoreless until Cortland scored a run in the bottom of the sixth. Tyler Phillips (Hancock) walked and pinch runner Ralph Nuzzi (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane) stole second. Nuzzi then moved to third on a slow grounder to short, and he scored on a Teague sacrifice fly to left.
SUNY Poly (1-13) grabbed the lead with three runs in the top of the seventh. Ryan Wegner led off with a walk but was forced at second on a Josh Rodriguez fielder's choice bunt. Connor Manderson hit a grounder to second, but an error during the throw to second put runners on first and second. With two outs, Rodriguez stole third, and Ray Smith hit an RBI single down the right field line to tie the score. Dante Rose followed with a two-run double to left center.
Mike Harrington (Glens Falls) earned the win as Cortland's second reliever. He entered to start the top of the eighth and allowed one hit and no runs in two innings with one strikeout. Anthony Visconte (East Islip) started and gave up just one hit and two walks in five innings. He fanned five batters. Jake Casey (Homer) allowed three unearned runs on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts in two innings.
SUNY Poly starter Sawyer Haney threw three scoreless innings with one hit, three walks and one strikeout. Dylan Jones gave up one run over the next three innings, and Drew Scharra suffered the loss after pitching the seventh and eighth innings.
BeVard finished 2-for-4 and Schetter walked twice to pace the Cortland offense. Rose was 1-for-3 with two RBI for the Wildcats, who ended with four hits.
