Rams Split Skyline Doubleheader with Rival Old Westbury

Old Westbury, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State baseball team split a Skyline doubleheader at Old Westbury on Sunday afternoon. The Rams edged the Panthers 10-9 in game one before falling, 2-1, in nine innings in game two.

Trailing 7-5 in the top of the eighth, freshman center fielder Cam Alfano (Yaphank, N.Y.) led off with a walk and freshman left fielder Vincent Rice (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) followed with a single to right. In the next at-bat, FSC (9-10, 6-2) cut the deficit to 7-6 on a Dalton McCarthy (Manorville, N.Y.) RBI single to center field. With bases loaded and one out, sophomore designated hitter Joseph Roche (Westbury, N.Y.) walked on a wild pitch as two runs came around to score which put the Rams ahead, 8-7. Farmingdale State added an RBI single from junior second baseman Domenic Palumbo (Levittown, N.Y.) and an Anthony Sirianni (Sayville, N.Y.) sacrifice bunt RBI to extend the lead to 10-7.

After the Panthers (11-9, 3-3) cut the deficit to 10-8 entering the bottom of the ninth, senior shortstop Tommy Ziegen (Glen Cove, N.Y.) led off with a home run to left field to close within one. FSC sophomore pitcher Ryan Mallon (Deer Park, N.Y.) retired the next three batters to preserve the 10-9 game one victory.

Rice was 4-for-5 at the plate with a pair of doubles and a run scored, while Palumbo was 3-for-4 with a run scored and 3 RBI. Mallon (1-1) earned the win after pitching the final five innings, allowing two runs on three hits, while striking out four.

For Old Westbury, senior right fielder Paul Rapoli (Yonkers, N.Y.) had three hits, a run scored and three runs batted in.

In game two, the Rams took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly to right by Palumbo which scored Rice. The Panthers quickly responded and tied the game at 1-1 by plating an unearned run in the bottom half of the fourth.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth, a bases loaded walk to pinch hitter Louis Sileno (Dix Hills, N.Y.) scored Ziegen and led OW to the 2-1 win.

Rice and junior third baseman Nick Osburn (East Islip, N.Y.) recorded FSC's two hits in the game.

The Rams next will square off against Baruch in a non-conference game at MCU Park on Thursday, April 6th at 3:30 p.m.
