Keuka College Baseball Drops Two at Abington

JENKINTOWN, Pa. – The Keuka College Baseball got swept in a North Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday to hosts Penn St.-Abington by the scores of 4-0 and 8-5

Keuka College (10-13, 3-3 NEAC) received three hit days from Dakota Skinner (Waverly, N.Y. / Tioga), Jake Redding (Victor, N.Y. / Victor), Brooks Vertoske (Horseheads, N.Y. / Horseheads), and Alec Bowie (Sparta, N.J. / Sparta). Bowie added three runs driven in for the Green and Gold.  

Ryan Caroway (Binghamton, N.Y. / Susquehanna Valley) took the loss in Game 1 for Keuka College. The junior threw the complete game and allowed just one earned run in the game. In Game 2, Alex Thornton (Union Springs, N.Y. / Union Springs) pitched a career-high four shutout innings in relief for the Wolves.

Keuka College 0 at Penn St.-Abington 4

Penn St.-Abington struck first with a run in the bottom of the first for the early 1-0 lead. The game would stay there until the sixth. The Wolves best chance to score came in the sixth inning as Jake Redding and Dakota Skinner hit back-to-back one out singles. However, Skinner was thrown out at second attempting to stretch it into a double. The Wolves got a walk to have runners on the corners with two outs, by a flyout ended the inning. In the bottom of the frame, the Nittany Lions took advantage of three Keuka errors to score three runs and take a 4-0 lead. The Wolves went down in order in the seventh as Abington defeated Keuka College 4-0.

Lead Wolf: Dakota Skinner continued to add to his hit streak. His single in the sixth inning pushed his streak out to 18 games.

Keuka College 5 at Penn St.-Abington 8

It would be the Wolves who took advantage of an error and take the early lead in Game 2. Keuka got a run in the top of the first, but the Nittany Lions responded with three in the bottom of the inning. Keuka got one back in the fourth on an RBI single by Alec Bowie. The Wolves had bases loaded, no outs following the hit, but Penn St.-Abington got a double play. An attempted sacrifice fly was caught in left and the runner was thrown out at home. The next batter grounded out for Keuka to end the inning.  Abington added insurance runs in the fourth and fifth to lead 8-2 over Keuka. The Wolves plated another run on an Abington error in the sixth, but they would go into the ninth trailing 8-3. Keuka College loaded the bases with three walks in the top of the ninth. Bowie came to the plate with two outs and hit a two-run single up the middle for Keuka. That brought the tying run to the plate, but Abington would get a groundout as they closed out the 8-5 victory over Keuka College.

Lead Wolf: Alec Bowie was there for the big hit for Keuka College all game. The junior tied his career-high with three hits and three RBIs in the game.

  • Keuka College has now lost six straight to Penn St.-Abington
  • The Nittany Lions are 16-3 against the Wolves overall and 14-3 in North Eastern Athletic Conference games
  • Dakota Skinner did get a hit in both games to extend his hitting streak to 19 games. Skinner has hit safely in 21 of 22 games played this season
  • Ryan Caroway went the distance in Game 1 for Keuka College. With his six innings pitched, Caroway now has 106.2 innings pitched in his career, eighth most in program history

Coming up for Keuka College: Keuka College will make up a non-conference doubleheader at D'Youville College on Tuesday before returning home and facing Wells College for the first time in school history on Wednesday.
