Keuka College Baseball Sweeps Wells on Wednesday

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – The Keuka College Baseball took a pair of North Eastern Athletic Conference games from Wells College on Wednesday at Kuhl Field by the scores of 5-4 and 7-2.

Dakota Skinner (Waverly, N.Y. / Tioga) continued to rack up the hits for Keuka College (12-13, 5-3 NEAC). The junior had five hits on the day and scored a pair of runs. Alec Bowie (Sparta, N.J. / Sparta), Dan Bamann (Rochester, N.Y. / Irondequoit), and Dave Nuzzo (Manlius, N.Y. / Fayetteville Manlius) also had multi-hit games for the Wolves.

Kevin Franz (Vestal, N.Y. / Vestal) earned the win in the opener with Dave Verrett (Cicero, N.Y. / Cicero-North Syracuse) getting the save. In Game 2, Mike Kosty (Vestal, N.Y. / Vestal) earned his first collegiate win by going 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, a career-high.

Keuka College 5 vs. Wells College 4

The Wolves took a 3-0 lead early as Dan Bamann had an RBI single in the first inning. Keuka College then got runs in the second on a groundout and a wild pitch for the three-run advantage. Wells got one back in the third inning to make it 3-1. In the fourth, Wells hit a line drive off the shin of starting pitcher Bryan Johnsen (Otisville, N.Y. / Minisink Valley), knocking him out of the game. The Express would go on to get three runs that inning, taking a 4-3 lead. The Wolves responded in the bottom of the fourth as Pat Flaherty (Lockport, N.Y. / Lockport) hit a sharp grounder under the first baseman's glove that scored two, giving the Wolves the lead back at 5-4. Head Coach Rick Ferchen went to his bullpen in the sixth and brought on closer Dave Verrett with two runners on and no outs. He would not allow a run to preserve the lead. Verrett then retired the Express in order in the seventh to save the 5-4 victory for Keuka College.

Lead Wolf: Dan Bamann provided the Wolves with a two-hit game in the opener. As a team, Keuka College only had five total hits in the game. Bamann had a single and a double. He also drove in a run.

Keuka College 7 vs. Wells College 2

The Wolves once again took a 3-0 lead early against Wells College. Two came home on a double by Dave Nuzzo to deep centerfield. The Wolves got a third run when the catcher threw the ball over the pitchers head, allowing Tyler Krowiak (Endwell, N.Y. / Seton Catholic) to score. Wells made it 3-1 in the second, but the Wolves that run back in the fourth as Alec Bowie laid down a squeeze bunt to score John Rizzo (Auburn, N.Y. / Auburn). The pitching combination of Ryan Lawrence (Rochester, N.Y. / Brighton) and Mike Kosty did the rest for Keuka College. Lawrence allowed just two hits, pitching into the fifth inning. Kosty relieved him and did not allow a run, throwing a career-high 4 2/3 innings. The Wolves added some late insurance runs to sweep Wells College, winning the nightcap 7-2.

Lead Wolf: The hot hitting of Dakota Skinner continues. The junior set a new career-high with four hits in the second game against Wells College. He had three singles and a double, moving his batting average up to .479 and extending his hitting streak to 21 games.

  • This was the first games between Keuka College and Wells College in baseball
  • The save by Dave Verrett in Game 1 was his fourth of the season. He now owns the Keuka College Single Season Save record and is tied for first place on the career list
  • With his five hits today, Dakota Skinner now has 45 this season. He moves into a tie with Billy McDermott for seventh most in a single season

Coming up for Keuka College: The Wolves will now prepare of a pair of big North Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheaders at home this weekend. Keuka College will host Lancaster Bible College at Kuhl Field on Saturday, and then welcome the Bison of Gallaudet University to campus on Sunday. Sunday will also be Parents' Day as Keuka College honors the parents and families of the 2017 Baseball team.
