NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport baseball team scored 15 runs in the first five innings and rolled to a 15-6 win over nationally-ranked Oswego State (2-1) Sunday evening, rounding out a dominating performance offensively this week. The Captains outscored opponents 47-7 in four games this week with a pair of shutouts and two games with at least 15 runs scored. 

Leading the charge on Sunday was senior designated hitter Brandon Ginch, who broke out with a four-hit, six-RBI effort against the Lakers. Ginch was 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI doubles and a three-run home run. He set a new career high with six runs batted in while highlighting a 17-hit performance as a team. 

Junior transfer Seth Woodard extended his hit streak to 10 games with a powerful performance in the middle of the lineup, matching Ginch with a 4-for-5 line. Woodard smashed a two-run home run to open the scoring in the first and added and RBI double in the third inning. 

On the mound, Thomas Packert improved to 2-0 after striking out 10 in 5.0 innings of work. The 10 K's matched his career high after allowing just five hits in five frames of work. In relief, Jaret West gave up one run in 1.1 innings, followed by a strong effort by Logan Aylor. Aylor struck out three in 1.2 innings, followed by a clean ninth out of closer Joe Burris. 

The Captains wasted little time in taking the lead on the nationally-ranked foe as they scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Woodard's two-run no-doubter to left center was the first of his career at CNU after transferring in from Old Dominion University prior to this season. Then, with two outs, Nicholas Baham singled through the left side and Ginch notched his first hit of the day. Sophomore shortstop Nick DiNapoli then stepped in and drove in a run with a single into center field. 

After Packert retired the side with a pair of strikeouts in the top of the second, the Captains added four more runs in the bottom half to take a 7-0 lead. In the inning, Baham delivered a two-run single up the middle and Ginch pounded a two-run double into the left field corner. 

The Lakers scratched across three runs in the top of the third when Brandon Nicholson hit a two-run home run after Zach Whelan singled home a run. After the first three batters reached and scored, Packert locked down and struck out two straight and retired the next three to escape any further damage. 

The CNU offense continued to roll in the third, scoring five runs to build the lead to 12-3. The big swing in the frame came off Ginch's bat, when he smoked a three-run homer to dead center field. Earlier in the inning, Woodard added an RBI double to plate Jordan Mason. 

With a big lead in hand, the Lakers were unable to pull any closer than seven runs when they scored two in the top of the fourth. The Captains answered with another run in the fourth and two more in the fifth inning for the final tally. Woodard and Ginch did the bulk of the damage, combining for 10 of the 14 Captain RBI's. 

The Captains also got multi-hit performances from Baham (3-for-4, 2 RBI, 4 R) and Conner Clark (2-for-3, 2 R, 2 BB), while all but one starter registered at least one hit. 

Oswego State was led by Nicholson, who went 3-for-3 with 5 RBI, accounting for almost all of the Lakers offense. Ryan Enos was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored and Whelan added a 2-for-3 effort out of the nine hole. 

CNU will return to action on Tuesday, February 27 against Eastern Mennonite University at 2:00 pm.
