Hedrick Earns Win No. 300 as #18 R-MC Baseball Blanks AU 10-0

ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon head coach Ray Hedrick recorded his 300th career victory at his alma mater in a 10-0 win over No. 16 Alvernia Sunday afternoon on Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park.

The 18th-ranked Yellow Jackets (5-0) pounded out 12 hits and scored in five of their eight at-bats against the Golden Wolves (0-2).

Sophomore Shawn Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) went 3 for 3 with a double, a walk and four runs to lead the R-MC offense. Sophomore Reece Yeargain (Chester, Va./Benedictine) had two hits and drove in three, while senior Joseph Tuzzolo (Newport News, Va./Menchville) went 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBI.

Junior Colin Selby (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) and three relievers combined on the one-hit shutout. Selby (2-0) allowed one hit and one walk in six innings with nine strikeouts. In 11 innings this season, Selby has surrendered one hits and two walks with 19 punchouts.

R-MC started the scoring in the second. Nickles belted a triple to center and scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0. Tuzzolo walked and came home on a base hit by Yeargain as the score grew to 2-0.

The Yellow Jackets took control with four in the third. Junior Jeff Butler (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) homered with one away, his first dinger of the season. Senior Rick Spiers (South Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) drew a two-out walk, moved to third on a single by Nickles and scored when Tuzzolo reached on an error as the lead became 4-0. Nickles and Tuzzolo both scored on a single to center by Yeargain to give R-MC a 6-0 advantage.

Tuzzolo knocked in Nickles with doubles in the fifth and seventh to make it 8-0. Sophomore Mike Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) and sophomore Zach Evans (Fort Mills, S.C./Seneca (NJ)) both singled and scored in the eighth, making it a 10-0 contest.

Randolph-Macon returns to action on Thursday, March 1, with a 2 p.m. contest at Christopher Newport.
