St. Thomas Baseball opened its 2018 season Tuesday with a 2-0 loss to UW-La Crosse in US Bank Stadium. The Tommies left seven on base and managed just three hits off two Eagles' pitchers.

Game two was halted by time limit in the top of the fifth inning with St. Thomas leading 2-1. The teams likely will attempt to finish the seven-inning game at a later date.

Senior Ryan Zimmerman struck out 11 and allowed just one earned run and three hits in the loss. La Crosse scored an unearned run without a hit in the top of the first inning, and added an RBI double in the top of the seventh for an insurance run.

Joe Burnley's deep fly ball with two on base in the fifth was caught near the left-field wall. UST managed just one runner past second base.

Junior Mason McMahon started for La Crosse and worked 4 1-3 innings for the victory. He allowed three hits and two walks and struck out 10. Junior Caleb Willems got the final eight outs for the save. Freshman Luke Schmitt had an RBI double in the seventh and Shane Coker had a sacrifice fly in the first inning for the Eagles.

Junior Henry DeCaster pitched game two for the Tommies, and over four innings allowed one run and two hits with no walks, four strikeouts and two hit batters. Josh Thorp tripled in the second inning and scored on Burnley's sac fly. In the UST fourth, Evan Kolker singled, Sam Cobbs reached on an error and Hunter Hart had an RBI single.

The Eagles' run was scored in the second with Jack Dwyer's single, a sac bunt and Alex Robson's RBI single. La Crosse starter Connor Cook worked all 4 2-3 innings and allowed just one earned run.
