RIT Baseball uses walk-off magic to rally for 6-5 win over Ohio Northern

AUBURNDALE, FL – Navada Waterman (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport) hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the RIT baseball team (2-0) to a 6-5 victory over Ohio Northern University (4-3) on Saturday morning from Lake Myrtle Park.
 
The Tigers led 3-0 after two innings of play and 4-0 after four innings before the Polar Bears rallied, scoring single runs in the fifth and sixth innings and three unearned runs in the ninth inning to take a 5-4 lead.
 
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Jason Schulz (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and Daniel Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) led off the inning with back-to-back infield singles. Dalton Murray (Savannah, NY/Clyde-Savannah) attempted to sacrifice both runners over with a bunt and ended up beating it out, loading the bases with nobody out. Joey Mylott (Aurora, OH/Western Reserve Academy) drew a walk with the bases loaded walk, driving in Schulz to tie the game. Waterman, the next batter, was the walk-off hero slamming a single to center field, driving in Capra to win the game.
 
A day after slamming 13 hits in a 9-3 win over Penn State-Altoona, RIT had eight hits, with four coming in the ninth inning. Capra and Murray had two hits apiece, while Patrick Mylott (Aurora, OH/Western Reserve Academy) and Schulz scored a pair of runs.
 
Daniel Zeglen (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) earned the start on the mound for RIT, allowing five hits and two runs (one earned) in 5 1/3 innings of work. Brett Bouchard (Fairport, NY/Fairport), who set the RIT career record by appearing in his 54th career game today, worked 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Kyle Povlock (Fairport, NY/Fairport) picked up the win in relief, allowing four hits and three unearned runs in two innings.
 
Matthew Burkett and Hayden Shenefield led the Polar Bears with three hits apiece. Jack Schaller started on the mound, allowing two earned runs, while striking out six batters in four innings. Scott Beaton was excellent in relief, allowing two hits and striking out five in four scoreless innings. T.J. Storer took the loss for the Polar Bears.
 
The Tigers opened the scoring with three runs in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Benjamin Terzini (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) led off with a walk and moved to second on a single by Patrick Mylott (Aurora, OH/Western Reserve Academy). Schulz reached on an error that scored Terzini. Capra promptly singled in Mylott to make it 2-0 Tigers. Joey Mylott (Aurora, OH/Western Reserve Academy) drove in Schulz with an RBI groundout to give RIT a 3-0 lead.
 
RIT loaded the bases with nobody out in the fourth inning before pushing a run across to make it 4-0 Tigers. In the top of the ninth inning, a hit, walk and error loaded the bases for the Polar Bears with one out. After a fielder's choice cut the RIT lead to 4-3, back-to-back RBI singles by Caleb Thomas and Jordan Bosta gave the Polar Bears their first lead of the game.
 
RIT is right back in action on Sunday, with a highly-anticipated matchup at 1 p.m. against No. 1 UMass-Boston at Lake Myrtle Park Field #6. The two teams also meet on Tuesday, March 13 at the Lake Myrtle Park Main Field at 1 p.m.
