Methodist Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader with Berea

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The 13th-ranked Methodist baseball team totaled 28 runs as it swept a doubleheader with Berea in USA South play at Armstrong-Shelley Field on Saturday.
 
In game one, the Monarchs (17-2, 9-0 USA South) registered a 13-0 win in seven innings before taking the second half of the twinbill 15-4. MU outscored the Mountaineers (2-16, 0-9) 43-5 over the weekend series.
 
Four Monarchs registered multiple hits as every batter reached base in the first game of the afternoon. Alex Kachler finished 2 for 3 with three RBI and a walk, while Tucker Criswell was also 2 for 3 and scored two runs. Parker Clayton went 2 for 2 with three RBI, two runs scored and a sacrifice fly.
 
In the third inning, Elliot Manley reached on a fielder's choice and found his way to third before scoring on a single up the middle by Kachler that also scored Clay Richardson who also reached on a fielder's choice, 2-0. MU added four more in the fourth inning as Criswell walks and moved to second on a sac bunt. Clayton walked and Criswell scored on an RBI single by Manley, who then stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Carter laced a single to right field to score both runners as MU took a 5-0 lead. Kachler singled to score Carter, but was thrown out at first, 6-0.
 
The Green and Gold batted around in the fifth inning and scored five more runs. Will May led off the frame with a double to right-center field and moved to third on an infield single by Criswell. Davis Cass drove in May and both runners moved up after a balk. Jacob Austin drew a walk to load the bases an Clayton hit a two-run single to right that eventually cleared the bases on a throwing error by the first baseman, 10-0. Clayton then scored three batters later on a two-out, RBI single by Richardson. MU pushed across an addition two runs in the sixth inning as Cass walked and came around to score on an RBI single by Austin, who advanced to third on a two-base error. He then crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly by Clayton, 13-0.
 
Seth Beard started on the hill and tossed 3.0 innings and allowed two hits with a strikeout and a pair of walks. Tristen Luck (5-0) received the victory after pitching 3.0 innings of relief, striking out two and giving up just one hit. Josh Robledo entered in the seventh inning and struck out the side. Michael Smither (0-4) was saddled with the loss after surrendering 10 runs (8 ER) on 10 hits with three walks and a pair of strikeouts. Zach Withers closed out the final 2.0 innings and scattered three hits, yielded three runs (1 ER) and walked two.
 
In game two, the Mountaineers scored a pair of runs in the opening frame as they registered five hits, including consecutive RBI singles to assume a 2-0 lead. The Monarchs responded in the second inning with five runs. Cass was hit by a pitch and scored on an RBI triple by Austin, 2-1. Manley lined a double to left field that scored Austin and Carter recorded a sacrifice fly that scored Clayton, who reached via a walk, 3-2. Kachler hit a double down the left field line to plate two runners as MU took a 5-2 lead.
 
Kachler hit another RBI double in the fourth inning to score Carter from second before May recorded a sac fly as the lead was pushed to 7-2 in favor of MU. BC cut the lead to 7-4 as it scored a run in the seventh and eighth frames. The Monarchs plated eight runs in the eighth to extend the lead to 15-4, which was the eventual final score. Carter hit an RBI triple to right center to score Clayton before scoring on a bunt and Criswell scored Richardson on an infield hit. Kachler scored on a wild pitch and Cass singled in May to reach a 12-4 margin. Clayton drew a bases-loaded walk and another run scored on a wild pitch before Manley finished out the scoring with a sac fly to left field.
 
Kachler was 3 for 5 with three RBI, two doubles, a walk and a run scored, while Criswell, Carter, Cass and Manley all had two hits. Carter and Cass each scored two times, while Manley and Carter had a pair of RBI. Richardson drew two walks and had a sacrifice bunt and scored three runs.
 
For the Mountaineers, Andrew Akins went 2 for 4 with an RBI and Cam Dacci was 2 for 3 at the plate with an RBI.
 
Sam Berman pitched 3.0 innings and allowed two runs on five hits with a strikeout in his second win of the season. Six pitchers saw the hill for MU as the staff combined for nine strikeouts in the game. Kelby Storm (0-3) was strapped with the loss and gave up seven runs (6 ER) on seven hits with two walks and a pair of strikeouts. Six pitchers also saw action for BC as they scattered 14 hits and 12 earned runs.
 
Methodist returns to action on Wednesday, March 14, with a nonconference matchup against Albertus Magnus at Armstrong-Shelley Field beginning at 4 pm.
