Keuka College Baseball Ends Florida Trip with a Split

AUBURNDALE, Fla. — The Keuka College Baseball team ended their Florida trip with a split on Tuesday. The Wolves defeated Thomas College 7-3 before falling to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point 20-0.

Keuka College (5-7) was led by Dakota Skinner (Waverly, N.Y. / Tioga) with four hits on the day and Sean Sheets (Manchester, N.Y. / Red Jacket) who finished with three. Ryan Caroway (Binghamton, N.Y / Susquehanna Valley) earned the win on the mound against Thomas College striking out five and allowing just two runs in six innings of work.

Keuka College took advantage of a Terrier mistake in the first inning for a 1-0 lead. Caroway allowed a hit in the first inning then settled in for the Wolves, throwing a perfect second, third, and fourth innings.

In the fifth, John Rizzo (Auburn, N.Y. / Auburn) plated a run on a squeeze but and the next batter, Dakota Skinner, provided an RBI single for Keuka. The lead grew to 4-0 in the sixth as Tyler Broderick (State College, Pa. / Saint Joseph's Catholic Academy) delivered an RBI single for the Wolves.

The Terriers got tow back in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 4-2. Keuka was able to get their four-run cushion back as pinch-hitter Tyler Freedman (Rochester, N.Y. / Aquinas) hit a two-run double in the eighth to make it 6-2. Both teams scored a run in the ninth as Keuka defeated Thomas 7-3.

Lead Wolves: The pitchers did a great job in keeping the Terriers off-balance all game. Ryan Caroway went the first six innings to earn the win. He gave way to Dan Steve (Cortland, N.Y. / Cortland). The freshman threw the final three innings, allowing just two hits, to earn his second save of the season. Neither Caroway or Steve walked a batter in the game.

University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point 20 vs. Keuka College 0

The Pointers jumped out to a fast 2-0 lead in the first and then added six in the second and four in the third. In total, Stevens Point had 22 hits, nine of which were extra base hits, compared to Keuka's seven singles.

The Wolves had a change to get on the board in the sixth as they loaded the bases with one out. However, the Pointers were able to turn the double play to escape the inning and preserve the shutout. The final score between the Pointers and the Wolves would be 20-0 in favor of Stevens Point.

Lead Wolf: Freshman Sean Sheets had two hits in the game for Keuka College.

  • Tuesday was the first ever meeting between Keuka College and Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Keuka College is now 0-4 all-time against teams from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
  • With the win, Ryan Caroway moves into a tie for third all-time with nine career victories
  • John Rizzo's squeeze bunt in the fifth inning against Thomas was the 15th sacrifice bunt of his career, passing Thomas Drumm '15 for most in school history

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves next scheduled game will be back at home at Kuhl Field. Keuka College will host Elmira College at 3pm on Tuesday, April 3. Keuka is 2-1 all-time against the Soaring Eagles.
