Spalding Sweeps Doubleheader Against Eureka

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Golden Eagles racked up 20 hits to take two games from Eureka, 9-8 and 7-4, Wednesday improving to 27-7 (14-3 SLIAC).

THE BASICS

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the first, Clay Kelly drove in Garrett Wilson from third with a sacrifice fly to right field.
  • Following a Red Devil run in the top of the second, SU answered when Jacob Reece doubled to center field allowing Cody Milliner to go from first to home plating a run.
  • The Golden Eagles scored five runs in the bottom of the third to take a 7-4 lead.  With runners on the corners, Eric Meyer doubled to left center driving in Dillon Sievert and moving Kelly to third. Quenton Brownlee put SU in front hitting a three-run home run over the wall in right center. Sievert drove in the final run on a base on balls walking in Matt Harper.
  • SU added a run in the fifth to push the lead to four runs. Reece reached on a walk, stole second, advanced to third on an errant throw by the catcher before coming home on Sievert single to left field.
  • Tied 8-8 in the bottom of the seventh, Reece was hit by a pitch and Wilson followed with a double to right center to give SU runners on second and third with one out. Eureka Head Coach Jerry Rashid elected to intentionally walk Sievert to put a force out at any base and put first baseman Ryan Vogel on the mound to relieve Brandon Porter. However, the move backfired as Vogel walked Clay Kelly to bring Reece in for the game winning run.  

GAME ONE STAT LEADERS

  • Quenton Brownlee drove in a team-high three runs going 2-for-4 with a home run.
  • Clay Kelly and Dillon Sievert each drove in a pair of runs, while Eric Meyer with 2-for-3 with one RBI.
  • Garrett Wilson finished 2-for-4 with a double and a triple while scoring a run.
  • Aaron Mitchell (2-1) earned the win allowing no runs, on two hits, while striking out one batter in 1.1 innings of relief action.  

FOR THE FOES

  • Sean Green led the Red Devils going 2-for-5 with two RBI and a home run.
  • Ryan Vogel (0-1) suffered the loss walking in the game winning run in his only batter faced.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS

  • Spalding scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to jump out to a 2-0 lead when Eric Meyer ripped a double to the center field wall driving in Dillon Sievert and Clay Kelly.
  • SU trailed 4-2 following four Red Devil runs in the top of the third. Meyer drove a ball on a line over the wall in left field to get a run back cutting the Eureka lead to one run.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Dillon Sievert hit his sixth home run of the season to tie the game, 4-4. Matt Harper doubled down the left field line bringing Meyer around from first to put Spalding in front, 5-4.
  • The Golden Eagles added a pair of runs in the eighth extending their lead to three runs. Garrett Wilson tripled to right field scoring Joe Hatcher and Wilson raced home following a wild pitch for the final run of the game.

GAME TWO STAT LEADERS

  • Eric Meyer went 2-for-4 with a home run and a double batting in three runs.
  • Matt Harper and Quenton Brownlee each went 2-for-4 with Harper driving in a run, while Sievert and Wilson each drove in a run apiece.
  • Zach Jones (2-1) earned his second win of the season limiting the Red Devils to no runs, on two hits, while striking out two batters, in 4.1 innings pitched.

FOR THE FOES

  • Joe Quinn led Eureka at the plate going 1-for-4 with two runs batted in.
  • Kyle Cashdollar (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing five runs, four earned, on eight hits, while striking out and walking three batters in 6.2 innings.

UP NEXT

  • Spalding will wrap up a five-game homestand this weekend with a Saturday/Sunday East Division series against the Blackburn Beavers. Saturday, the Golden Eagles and Beavers will play a doubleheader starting at 1:00 pm EST. Sunday marks Senior Day where we'll recognize this year's seniors prior to a nine inning tilt with the Beaver's at 1:00 pm EST.
