ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team improved to 21-14 on the season with a 4-3 victory over Alfred State College at Cornell's Hoy Field on Monday afternoon. Ithaca led for the entire contest and nearly had a complete game tossed by junior Emmett Dunn.
Dunn put together his best outing of the season, as he hurled 8.1 innings and scattered five hits and allowed two runs. He also struck out seven batters, walked none, and induced 11 groundouts. Dunn is now 4-1 on the season.
The Bombers got on the board in bottom of the fourth inning as freshman Jack Lynch drove in junior Andrew Bailey with a bases loaded sacrifice fly to left field to give IC a 1-0 lead. Bailey led off the inning with a double.
IC was unable to plate another run after a double steal by juniors Adam Gallagher and Matt Carey moved both runners into scoring position.
Ithaca took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth as senior Domenic Boresta scored the first run of the inning on a throwing error after a lineout in the infield. Alfred's shortstop attempted to throw behind Boresta at third but his throw was off target. The next run scored on an RBI single to left by Gallagher, which brought home junior Webb Little from second. W. Little found his way on with a single and then stole second.
Sophomore Andrew Wollner pushed Ithaca's lead to 4-0 with a line drive single to left in the bottom of the sixth to bring in junior Cam Fuoti, who led off with a double.
Alfred State cut Ithaca's lead in half, 4-2, with a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning.
Another run scored for the Pioneers in the top of the ninth on a throwing error to first base, which allowed the runner to score from second.
Junior Matt Eiel would shut down the Pioneers after that, as he recorded a strikeout and fly out to end the game for his first save of the season.
Bailey, Boresta and Fuoti each had two hits in the win for IC.
The Bombers are back in action tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. against New Paltz at Freeman Field.
