Baseball Salvages Split with Game Two Win over Farmingdale in Skyline Series

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – For the first time in its seven Skyline Conference series in 2018, the Maritime baseball split a doubleheader on Long Island on Saturday afternoon. The Privateers fell in their opener against the Farmingdale Rams by an 8-10 score, before coming back to knock off the Rams 4-2 in the second game.
 
Senior Matt Costleigh (West Islip, N.Y./St. Anthony's) continues his torrid pace at the plate as he went 4-for-8 with five RBIs on the doubleheader while amassing two doubles and a two-run triple in the second game.
 
Senior Aaron Schiavoni (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) had three hits along with freshman Shan Sullivan, while sophomore Phil Russo (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) collected two singles on the day. Senior Stephen Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) had a double, while classmate Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) along with sophomore Antonio Diaz (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) and freshmen Travis Zurita (Ozone Park, N.Y./Poly Prep) and Zach Baber (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) all had singles on the day.
 
On the hill the Privateers got a strong start in game two from senior Anthony D'Ancona (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman), who pitched a complete game with three strikeouts while allowing just one earned run and scattering 10 hits.
 
Freshman Kevin Dunn (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) pitched a 6 2/3 innings in relief in the opener and struck out four batters while allowing one earned run during his long relief outing. Freshman Dylan Clausen (Southold, N.Y./Southold) made the start and labored before being lifted after registering just four outs in the opener.
 
Game 2 Recap
D'Ancona and Farmingdale's starters matched scoreless innings through the first five as Maritime's right-hander stranded six runners on base through the first four innings.
 
In the top of the sixth, Baber bunted down the third base line for a leadoff single. Two batters later Deddo walked to push two runners on base. Up next was Costleigh, who tripled into the left centerfield gap before he also scored on the play due to a defensive miscue by the Rams to put the Privateers up by three.
 
Farmingdale scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth to trim the Privateer lead to 3-1.
 
Maritime got the run back in the top of the seventh as Semler walked to leadoff the seventh before moving up to second on a groundout. Sullivan was up next and singled up the middle to chase Semler home and give the Privateers a three-run cushion.
 
D'Ancona got the first batter out on a fly ball to center, before the Rams laced a triple past a diving Russo at first base and into the right field corner. A run scored on an RBI groundout, before D'Ancona got the final batter to fly out to center to seal the win for the Privateers.
 
Game 1 Recap
In the opener Farmingdale took a three-run lead in the bottom of the first before playing five more in the bottom of the second. All eight runs were charged to Clausen, before the lefty was lifted for Dunn, who allowed two inherited runners to score before Schiavoni got the third out of the inning on a caught stealing.
 
The Privateers trailed 8-0 heading to the third, but rallied for a seven-run outburst that began with Semler walking on a 3-2 pitch. Sullivan doubled before freshman Adam Mosca (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) walked to load the bases. A passed ball brought the first Privateer run home to make the score 8-1.
 
Zurita walked to re-load the bases before a wild pitch brought home Maritime's second run. Deddo then walked to load the bases once again.  Costleigh doubled down the left field line to clear the bases before Russo singled to move Costleigh up to third. With Schiavoni at bat, a wild pitch allowed Costleigh to score before Schiavoni singled to put runners at the corner once again.
 
Up next was Diaz, who knocked a single down the right field line to pull the Privateers back within one at 8-7.
 
Dunn made his way through the third and fourth innings and allowed Farmingdale to get a run back in the bottom of the fifth.
 
The Privateers chipped back as Semler was hit by a pitch before moving up to second on a wild pitch. Sullivan singled to put runners at the corner before Zurita connected on a sacrifice fly to get Maritime back within one.
 
Both teams went scoreless in the seventh before the Rams added an insurance run to move ahead by a 10-8 margin.
 
In the top of the ninth Russo singled to right center before Schiavoni singled to put the tying runs on base. Freshmen Angelo Brucculeri (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) and Matt Eng (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) pinch ran to put speed on the bases. Two batters later Semler reached on a ground ball that was booted by the Farmingdale third baseman as the Privateers loaded the bases with two down.
 
Sullivan was up next and hit a sinking line drive to right centerfield that was caught on a dive by the Farmingdale right fielder as the Rams held on for the win.
 
Maritime (21-10, 9-5 Skyline) will play two more Skyline Conference games on Sunday as the Privateers will visit the Mount St. Mary Knights for a league doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
 
Farmingdale (18-11, 10-4 Skyline) will visit Merchant Marine for a league doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. from Lower Roosevelt Field.
