THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Maritime defeated the Beavers of City College of New York 10-8 in their final non-conference game of the season on Reinhart Baseball Field Wednesday night.
Freshman outfield Travis Zurita (Ozone Park, N.Y./Poly Prep) led the Privateers with four hits in his five at bats, while driving in one run and scoring one more. Freshman Shane Sullivan(Stewart Manor, N.Y./Chaminade) went 2-for-3 on the game, knocking in two runs while scoring two more and going 1-for-1 on stolen base attempts.
Senior Stephen Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) was also in on the action as he went 2-for-5 with one double and two RBIs. Senior infielder Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville), sophomore first baseman Phil Russo (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) and freshman Adam Mosca(Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) each had one RBI for the game.
On the mound for Maritime was sophomore right hander Matthew Paghidas (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place). He went five innings strong allowing just three hits and two earned runs while striking out three batters. Freshman southpaw Kyle Peterson (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) came on in relief of Paghidas and got the win, pitching two innings.
After some trouble in the ninth, sophomore Skylar Graff (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) was called upon for the save as he got the last three outs, preserving the 10-8 victory for Maritime.
CCNY opened the first inning with one run after the leadoff runner came around to score on a ground ball out. CCNY score one run again in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead.
Maritime got their offense going with a one out single from Antonio Diaz (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport), followed by four more singles and a fielder's choice as the Privateers now lead 3-2. Over the next three innings both teams were scoreless as Maritime led 3-2 headed to the sixth.
In the home half of the sixth, Semler led off the inning with a double to left center, and he would score on the next play after two errors from CCNY, making the score 4-2. Then with the two outs and the bases loaded Russo singled up the middle scoring Mosca from third to make it 5-2 but Zurita was gunned out at the plate to end the inning.
CCNY came right back in the top of the seventh with an RBI single followed by a two-run home run to right field tying the game at five. In the bottom of the seventh Maritime was able to take the lead back after a few errors from CCNY. After senior catcher Aaron Schiavoni (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) and Semler reached on an error, they both would come around to score thanks to a single up the middle from Sullivan, making the score 7-5.
Three batters later Costleigh would come to plate with the bases loaded as he belted a shot to left field that was dropped by the left fielder allowing all three base runners to score, increasing the lead to 10-5.
In the top of the ninth, CCNY scored two runs before Graff came on in relief. With the bases loaded and the go-ahead run at the plate, Graff induced a ground ball double play allowing one runner to score making the score 10-8. He would strike out the next batter giving Maritime the 10-8 win.
Maritime (20-9) will be back in action Saturday April 21st when they go on the road to face Farmingdale in a Skyline Conference game set to start at 12 p.m. at Rams Field.
City College (9-17) will return to play Saturday April 21st, when they go on the road to face John Jay starting at 12 p.m.
