Royals Capitalize On Early Lead At Averett

The EMU Diamond Royals won on the road at Averett today by a score of 13-7. The Royals improve to 6-6-1 on the season and host Messiah tomorrow at 2:30pm.

The Royals got off to a good start in the first inning loading the bases with the first three batters. Tyler McFadden (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) singled in the first two runs then Daniel Scott (Moneta, Va. /Staunton River) earned a bases loaded walk to add another. Jordan Brake (Roanoke, Va. /Lord Botetourt) hit a sacrifice fly to add a fourth run in the inning.

After the Cougars scored two in the bottom of the second, EMU responded in the top of the third by once again loading the bases and Brake hitting an RBI single. Billy Quinn (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) earned a bases loaded walk before Jordan Jones(Saxe, Va./Randolph Henry) brought in a run on a fielder's choice.

Zach Roberts (Stuarts Draft, Va./Riverheads) got the offense going again in the sixth inning with a leadoff single. He then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error before being walked in by Jacob Merica (Elkton, Va./East Rockingham) earning another bases loaded walk. Scott hit a two-run single that brought in Jaylon Lee (Newport News, Va./Denbigh) and McFadden who walked to get on.

Brett Lindsay (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) singled in two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Lee hit a triple then McFadden brought him in on a groundout.

Ethan Mathews (Harrisonburg, Va./Broadway) threw the last three and a third innings scoreless earning the save while striking out five and without allowing a hit.

Brendon Barrett (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) earned the win pitching two and two-thirds innings while John Judy (Shanks, W.V./Hampshire) started the game throwing the first three innings.

Jones, Roberts, and Lee each had two hits and combined to score eight runs. McFadden and Lindsay combined for five RBI and four runs scored. Scott reached base twice and had three RBI.
