ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team earned a marquee regional victory on Tuesday afternoon at Freeman Field as the Bombers walked-off with a 6-5 win over Oswego State to improve to 12-4 on the season. Oswego, which is now 12-6 on the year, has reached the Division III College World Series each of the past two seasons.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Ithaca trailed by a score of 5-4. Junior Buzz Shirley led off with a double to the left-center gap and then moved up to third on an infield single by Matt Carey. After an out was recorded, Carey stole second to move the winning run into scoring position. A wild pitch ensued to bring Shirley home for the tying run and then senior Garrett Snyder won the game with a sacrifice fly to center, which brought home Carey.
The Bombers never led in the contest until the walk-off sac fly.
Senior Matt Eiel picked up his first win of the season in 2.0 innings of relief with a strikeout. Graduate student Tyler Hill earned the start and struck out six batters over seven innings before turning the ball over to Eiel.
Oswego took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-out solo home run to right field by Mike Dellicarri, and the Lakers had an opportunity to add onto their lead after a triple and hit by pitch, but Hill got out of the jam with a strikeout.
The Lakers' lead grew to 3-0 in the third inning on a two-run blast by Ryan Enos over the left-center fence with no outs.
In the bottom of the third, the Bombers strung together a two-out rally to pull to within a run at 3-2. Senior Andrew Bailey started things off with a one-out single down the left field line and then moved up to third on a base hit to center by senior Webb Little. A wild pitch allowed Bailey to cross the plate and then senior Adam Gallagher laced a double down the left field line to plate W. Little.
Oswego threatened to tack on a few more runs by loading the bases with a single, walk and catcher's interference, but a fielder's choice to end the frame kept the Lakers off the board. The Lakers would get back in the scoring column in the fifth inning on a single through the left side, which brought home a runner from second, who reached on a lead-off double.
The Bombers knotted the contest up at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run home run to left-center by Bailey, which followed a lead-off double from sophomore Jack Lynch.
Oswego would regain the edge in the sixth, 5-4, after a lead-off triple crossed the plate on a base hit to left field. The triple occurred after an apparent catch by sophomore Garrett Callaghan in the gap popped out of his glove as he fell to his back and the ball rolled to the wall, allowing the Oswego runner to leg out the extra base hit.
Bailey went 2-for-3 in the game with two RBI and two runs scored, while Gallagher and senior Cam Fuoti each recorded two hits for the Bombers.
IC is back in action tomorrow afternoon for a 4 p.m. non-conference contest against the University of Rochester at Freeman Field.
