Cortland Wins 22-2 at Marywood for Eighth Straight Victory

SCRANTON, PA. – Cortland scored 13 runs over the first three innings as the Red Dragons defeated host Marywood University, 22-2, in a non-league baseball matchup. Cortland won its eighth straight game to improve to 15-8-1 on the season.
 
Cortland finished with 19 hits and also drew 10 walks in the win. Dan Schweitzer (Poughquag/Arlington) finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored, Matt Krafft (Cornwall) was 3-for-4 with two RBI, Colin BeVard (Syracuse/West Genesee) ended 2-for-2 with four RBI and Scott Giordano (Croton-on-Hudson/Croton-Harmon) was 2-for-3 with a triple, double, two RBI and three runs scored.
 
Also for the Red Dragons, Mat Bruno (Rye) hit a first-inning grand slam and also drew a walk in his two plate appearances. Mike O'Connor (Buffalo/North Tonawanda) went 1-for-3 with three walks, an RBI and three runs scored and Steven Salisbury (Cranston, RI/Moses Brown) finished 1-for-3 with a walk, RBI and two runs. Paul Franzese (Somers) was 1-for-2 with two walks and a run.
 
Andrew Barnes (Rochester, NH/Spaulding) started as part of a predetermined rotation for the Red Dragons and earned the victory with four innings of three-hit ball. He struck out six, walked two and allowed two runs. Five Cortland relievers each tossed one scoreless inning. Mitchell Cavanagh (Oneida) and Chris Puzakulics (Vestal) each struck out one and walked one  in a hitless frame. Isiah Hudson (Hyde Park/FDR) struck out three and didn't allow a hit in the seventh, Shane Mugnolo (Howard Beach/Xaverian) also fanned three while giving up one hit in the eighth, and Dan Hobbs (Saratoga Springs) struck out two in the ninth with no hits allowed as Cortland pitching finished with a combined 16 strikeouts.
 
John Mandarano started for Marywood (4-15) and gave up 10 runs, eight earned in two-plus innings for the loss. Joseph Bruno was 1-for-2 with a walk and RBI and Jake Schuster finished 1-for-3 for the Pacers.
 
Cortland scored five in the first, three in the second and five in the third. The Red Dragons added a run in the fourth to go up 14-0, with Marywood scoring its two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Cortland plated seven runs in the sixth and closed the scoring with one run in the eighth.
 
Cortland will play a three-game SUNYAC series at Fredonia this weekend with one game Friday and two Saturday. Both teams enter the weekend with 6-0 records in league play.
