William Paterson's Bats Come Alive in 15-11 Victory at NJCU

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team's (16-9, 3-4 NJAC) bats came alive, knocking out 16 hits en route to a 15-11 victory at New Jersey City (12-10, 2-5 NJAC) April 11.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Pioneers seized a 5-0 lead during their first at-bat, using a two-run error, two-RBI double by junior third baseman Carlos Perez and run-scoring single by junior second baseman Matt Ferrara.
  • WP added seven more in the third with a Ferrara RBI-single, two-run doubles by sophomore center fielder Steven DiGirolamo and sophomore left fielder Frankie Deane, and run-scoring base hits by junior designated hitter Vin Dorio and sophomore catcher Steve Yelin.
  • After the Gothic Knights crossed the plate twice during the home half of the third, William Paterson made it a 13-2 game in the fourth with two errors and a single.
  • NJCU scored once during the home half of the fifth and six times in the sixth, cutting it to a 13-9 margin.
  • Ferrara's bases-loaded fielder's choice added one more run during the top of the seventh inning.
  • Sophomore first baseman Carson Weis led off the top of the ninth with a home run to left-center field, extending the lead to 15-9.
  • Two hits and a pair of errors allowed the Gothic Knights to plate a pair of unearned runs during their final at-bat.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Yelin finished 4-for-4 with a double, RBI and two runs scored. DiGirolamo was 3-for-6 while adding a double, two RBI and a run scored, while Weis went 3-for-6 with a homer and three runs scored.
  • Ferrara drove in three runs, and Perez and Deane each had two RBI.
  • Freshman Jake Klag tossed 5.1 innings, giving up seven runs (six earned) on six hits and a walk, registering five strikeouts (1-2). Classmate Matt Lawler was charged with four unearned errors, three hits and three walks, striking out two during 3.2 innings of relief for his first save.
  • The 16 hits were the most for WP since March 20, when the Pioneers collected 16 during a 9-4 win against Manhattanville.
