McCarthy Shuts Down Beavers

PASADENANolan McCarthy pitched a complete game gem as the Occidental baseball team beat Caltech 4-1 on Friday in Game 1 of three between the teams this weekend.

McCarthy, a junior from Portland, Ore., continues to dominate everyone he faces. He struck out 12 batters, with just one walk, and did not allow an earned run. He's only allowed six earned runs in 41 innings pitched in SCIAC play. He also has an incredible 69 strikeouts with just 14 walks this season.

Oxy's Reid Gibbs went 2 for 4 with a double, a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base, Antonio Andrade went 2 for 4, Bryan Smith went 1 for 4 with an RBI, a run scored and a triple, Jared Baur went 1 for 4 with an RBI, a run scored and a double, and Jack Brancheau went 1 for 5 with an RBI-single.

The Tigers scored one run in the top of the first and then three in the fourth.

Caltech's only run came home in the fifth.

Season Impact: The Tigers move into a tie for second place at 8-5, trailing first-place Chapman, who is 11-5. Oxy is 20-9 overall on the season.

Caltech has had its best season in years, now standing at 7-16 with four conference wins already.

Next Game: The Tigers return home to play Caltech in a doubleheader at Anderson Field on Saturday. Game 1 starts at 11 a.m.
